Great food – hot restaurant. I didn’t have high expectations after seeing the condition of the other Japanese steakhouses in Gainesville, so I was pleasantly surprised that this restaurant was well maintained, clean and had good food. My only complaint was that it was hotter than hades in there. They need to turn the AC down when all the grills are in use. I don’t like sweating through my entire meal. It would also be nice if they offered early bird specials like most do, but if they’re the best one in town, I suppose they feel they don’t need to.
I have been to Yamato before and never really had any issues until last night regarding the FREE birthday meal. I took my mother (birthday), wife, and 2 really small children out with my mother getting the FREE meal. Waiter was ok. Not the worse but nowhere near the best. After we enjoyed our meals, I got the check and noticed gratuity of 18% was added in. I questioned this because we had a small party and I didn t think kids counted towards the party. Anyways, I asked the waiter (and another staff member) and you really don t get the birthday meal for free!! Turns out, you pay gratuity on that meal and get this, they add it in BEFORE they take the meal off! That means you are paying a slightly higher gratuity as opposed to one without the FREE meal!! In summary, the gratuity amount was roughly the exact cost of another meal! Not impressed by this little hidden and sneaky cost and I would caution you if you are going there to get a FREE meal on your birthday. BEWARE!!!!!!
Great place to Celebrate a Birthday!. We always go to Yamatos to celebrate birthdays. It is a wonderful treat. All of the Chefs are well skilled and food is amazing!!
Great food! Fast service!. Ate here for my birthday and the food is great! Super fast service because it was empty..it was Saturday night but I guess we’re early eaters? We were in and out in 30 minutes! Would definitely go again.
Excellent Hibachi. This place is phenomenal for birthdays (you must show your ID proving your birthday is on that day and your meal is free of charge). The yummy yummy sauce is amazing and goes with everything! I always get the steak and shrimp with fried rice, it’s delicious! The service is good although sometimes I had to wait quiet a bit for them to start cooking the food. The wait is worth it though 🙂
The food is delicious! However, even with a reservation I have waited up to an hour to be seated (this has happened multiple times). If you go, please do so on a week night.
Great Japanese. If you are looking for something in particular I dont recommend, but if you want an experience with Japanese culture and entertainment. This restaurant is great! and I guarantee you cannot leave hungry! Great NY Strip and Chicken or Combo them both! Awesome house cocktails!
