Worst sandwich ever. This is one of the most disgusting restraunts I have ever ate at. I have ate a higher quality sandwich at the kangaroo down the street. Worst mistake ever, don’t ever eat here!!!!

Nasty. The sandwich was horrible. I think there had to be dirt on my lettuce. DO NOT EAT HERE EVER.

Hard to find, but worth the effort!. I love finding wonderful hole in the wall eateries. When I arrive in Jacksonville, I often feel an almost overpowering yearning for the local delicacy, the Camel Rider Sandwich. It isn’t a complicated thing, just a half of pita bread, stuffed with ham, salami, cheese, and vegetables, and topped with vinaigrette dressing. I’ve been enjoying these tasty bites since the ’60s, and I just can’t get enough. With the exception of Birmingham, I don’t think you can get ’em anyplace else. I stumbled upon the Depot partly from desperation, partly out of luck. I asked a mailman where I could get a good camel rider. He pointed over his shoulder at the Sandwich Depot. Sometimes its better to be lucky than smart! Of course, like most simple dishes, the devil is in the details. The Sandwich Depot is on top of the details. The friendly lady who greeted me as I walked in the door made my sandwich. AT LEAST a half pound of Boars Head ham, salami, and Swiss cheese (the classic version uses American, I think) went into the pita. At the Depot its all Boars Head meat and cheese, all the time. Sliced banana peppers, a slice of tomato, and a little dab of mayonnaise were added next. What appeared to be Claussen sliced pickles went in, along with lettuce. Then came the vinaigrette. The tab? Hold your breath: $5.50. This may very well be the best Camel Rider Sandwich in San Jose, Baymeadows, Lakewood, maybe even the entire southside of Jacksonville. Yes, they have hamburgers, and although I haven’t tried one yet, they looked really good. When I asked if they could be prepared medium rare, I was told that all burgers are cooked to at least medium well, IE: no pink. Burgers are $3.19, you can add bacon for $3.99. Soup of the day is $2.50. By the way, the place isn’t very fancy, but its clean. The kitchen is in plain view, and its clean. Even the mens room is clean, and at the hour I visited, it had no doubt been in steady use since 6:00 am, when they open for BREAKFAST! Egg rider with cheese. anyone? Breakfast is served until 10:30 AM. Sandwich Depot is in the middle of a nondescript strip mall on Powers Ave, between University and Morton. Sure, besides camel riders, they have godfathers, French dips, reubens, clubs, even CUBAN sandwiches! If anybody finds a better sandwich shop in the area, I really want to hear about it!
