Excellent. My favorite dining in key west this trip. Everything was excellent. We tried for small plates. I had two beers. $50. Not bad all things considered. Plenty of food for two.
I’ve eaten at dozens of Key West restaurants over the years. The city is a Mecca for foodies, with many fine choices.Firefly quite unexpectedly has become my favorite of all of them.Start with an attractive yet relaxing atmosphere, in what appears to be a southern house, complete with a large covered second floor deck. That is where we dined, looking out at the comings and goings on Petronia Street, one block West of the famed Blue Heaven. A wonderfully eclectic mix of alt southern acoustic music played in the background, taking us further into our dreams of dining on a porch in maybe Louisiana or Mississippi a century ago. The menu played into that journey, with a fun mix of creole meets traditional southern cuisine. I love the menu, and wished I could have sampled everything offered up on it.Fried chicken is what Firefly is famous for, and my dining partner ordered it. He proclaimed it the very best fried chicken he had eaten in a restaurant — any restaurant. He also raved about the creamy mashed potatoes and beef gravy. My shrimp and andouille sausage gumbo arrived in a huge bowl. I could smell the enticing aroma of the andouille even before our charming waitress set the bowl down in front of me. It was quite highly seasoned, but I loved every bite of it.We started our meal with bacon beignets. Oh my goodness they were good. And we ended our meal with an enormous piece of key lime cake. Too much for even the two of us to finish.Prices are fair, and service was excellent. This is a great place to spend a relaxing evening with friends after a relaxing day in America’s most relaxed community. I highly recommend Firefly.
