Great place for a quick, inexpensive breakfast. The dinner is pretty good too, if you like country/soul food. The place itself doesn’t look like much, so try to overlook that. The food and the people are good though.
11/18 Update:We’ve downgraded our rating to 3 stars from 4. Since moving into their new location on Fred George, service has been moving steadily downhill. The food, when it finally arrives is still good, but you won’t get it quickly and unless you’re eating alone, all the food at the table isn’t likely to come out at the same time. The wait between folks getting their orders can be substantial. Also, pricing seems to be at the whim of the server. The same meal we paid $19 and change for last week was over $21 today. No, the menu prices didn’t change (although they did raise prices when they moved). This problem is exacerbated by their archaic order system which still uses those little green order slips. There is no itemization, so you can’t see what you’re being charged for. I had hoped they were going to put in a POS when they moved, but they didn’t.Previously I mentioned that they were closed on Sunday. That has changed. They are now open on Sunday and closed on Monday. Finally, the food is still worth the 3 star rating, but don’t go in looking to get in and out quickly or to be impressed by the service. Original review: We’ve been eating here once a week or so for several months, primarily breakfast. The food is just what we like – home cooking, nothing fancy. Unless you’re looking for pretentious brunch dishes, there isn’t much you’d want for breakfast that you can’t get here – eggs, pancakes, waffles, omelets, a variety of sausage, turkey bacon, oatmeal, etc., pretty much anything breakfast related. We’ve never been disappointed with the quality of the food. Another great thing is the prices. If you like to order a la carte, this is the place. Unlike some places that jack up the price on individual items, CK keeps their prices reasonable, so a breakfast assembled a la carte won’t break the bank.If you like to go to breakfast on the weekend, the place can be crowded on Saturday (they aren’t open on Sunday). The front tables usually fill up first, so sometimes you can find a table in the back even when the front is full. Service is usually good from the servers. If I had an issue, it would be that when they are a little busy, the kitchen sometimes doesn’t get out all the food at the same time. This doesn’t bother us, but it drives some people nuts. Our experience for lunch is nil, but they have a deal where you get a meat and two sides for a reasonable price. They also have a regular menu. Our dinner experience is limited, but we have been on a few occasions. The food was tasty and the portions were good. They have a great shrimp special. Again, simple country cooking. The place has been around for over 25 years, so they must be doing something right.
Country cooking with an attitude. There is not a better breakfast in town and lunch and dinner are great deals. They stick to what they know and they do it well. Nothing fancy, just good eats.
