Service was good, food was amazing. Authentic Cuban food. The picadillo was tender and full of flavor. The r ce was amazing. The media noche sandwich was served hot and all meats sliced thin. We travel for food and we will be back.
Don’t listen to any of the negative reviews. I don’t doubt them, but after eating here, I’m seriously considering quitting my job and opening a Cuban restaurant. The food here is not only the best Cuban food I’ve ever had, it’s quite possibly the best food I’ve ever had. I have never once enjoyed a plantain in my life. The fried plantain that came on the side of my Picadillo made me want to eat plantains forever. Seriously, come here and eat.
I’ve been here a couple times with subpar service, however, today was the tipping point. My party of 2 sat down, ordered, and we waited patiently as everyone else in the restaurant received their food. After about 45 minutes they brought out some bread and said the food was coming right up… An hour deep and a party of 4, which arrived a good 30 minutes after us, were served their food leaving us with empty stomachs and disappointment that they hadn’t even acknowledged us since they dropped off the bread. We decided to get up and leave… To no avail, they watched us walkout without saying a word. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO EAT WITHIN 2 HOURS. Only come here if you would like to be cramped into a tiny hot restaurant that might not even serve food after all. We won’t be returning.
Really great food with lots of authentic Cuban food. There’s something for everyone at this place. The Cuban sandwich is super tasty with plenty of meat. They are trying very hard to make it a great time and a nice experience for everyone.
About as good as it gets this side of Havana!. This was my third visit in as many weeks. First time was lunch with a girlfriend, then dinner with two girlfriends and last night dinner with my husband. Every time, everyone was impressed with the food. Our waitress on this last visit was Gabriela. What a delight! A bubbly personality together with an intimate knowledge of how the food is prepared and cooked. Quite a find in Melbourne where most of the run-of-the-mill restaurant wait staff think Hollandaise are people from Holland and vinaigrette is pronounced vinegar-ette!The previous reviewer mentioned FULL BAR. That’s incorrect. It’s beer and wine only – the wine list being particularly good with a nice selection of old and new world wines. We chose a Malbec from Argentina. Gabriela presented us with some Cuban bread served with finely diced ham and an onion and oil dipping sauce. Given sufficient quantities of each you could make a meal of it right there! We passed on the appetizers and went straight to the entrees. I chose the Camarones al Ajillo which is shrimp sauted in garlic, onion, green pepper, olive oil and spices. My husband, the carnivore, chose the Masitas de Puerco – lean chunks of marinated pork served with a special mojo sauce and topped with onions. Both entrees came with a sweet plantain, a fried plantain and a choice of white, yellow, or moro rice and red or black beans. Both entrees were excellent! Not being big dessert eaters we passed on those but my husband did enjoy a Cuban coffee. A thoroughly enjoyable dinner. We also enjoyed the latino music videos being shown on the TV’s. Added that extra bit of ambience.Cuban Island knows how to do authentic Cuban food. Go! Try it! You will not be disappointed. Now if there is a negative, we share the previous reviewer’s comments about having non-Cuban dishes on the menu such as pasta. Last night the table adjoining us ordered Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches and french fries! Really?! Are you kidding me?! Come on people, push the boat out, try something different! Cuban food is not weird (escargot), not raw (sushi), not alive (oysters) and not spicy (Indian) – it’s beef, pork, chicken and shrimp, rice, beans and plantains – what’s not to like?! Jeez!! So, the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich should disappear along with the pasta dishes and french fries. The Cuban cuisine is eminently capable of standing on it’s own two feet. We shall return – many more times to come!
Excellent. The food and the service was excellent. Delicious!
Lunch time. Got there about one-ish. Hard finding a parking spot. Walked in and it was busy. (glad to see local place doing well)Seated ourselves. Nice place a bit noisey – acoustics are to be desired. Friendly wait staff. They brought some thin sliced toasted bread with side of onion/garlic infused oil …(very tastey) We ordered from the Lunch menu – nice selection. I had the Pan con Lechon(I got sauteed onion) – Very good – large portion, pulled pork was prepared well. My friend tried the Sandwich Cubano w/salad- again very good … By the time we left it had thinned out and the noise was manageable. I will go again. It will be on my list of places to take visitors to …
