La Vela in Downtown Melbourne encompasses some of the great aspects of the downtown nightlife. Good food, a place to get together, and a bar to get some drinks. The interior is warmed by their brick pizza oven and features a large full liquor bar. The room feels very comfortable, and combines the casual setting of a pizzeria with a refined restaurant all in one setting. On the exterior there is a vast outside seating area with cover available, great for gatherings and special occasions. The staff is charismatic, engaging diners as soon as they walk in the door. The selection of dishes was limited, but featured Italian classics such as Chicken Marsala and Linguini Alfredo. I opted for the Eggplant Parmigiana. The robust tomato sauce brought out the best flavors in the dish and the pasta was cooked al dente, as it should be. All in all, I would say the dish I was served met my expectations of a good eggplant parmigiana. However, I must add that I was sitting next to the pizza oven where they were cooking pizzas nonstop. I am filled with a deep regret for not having ordered a pizza. Not because my dish was lacking, but because the pizza looks fantastic. They use fresh ingredients and gooey mozzarella cheese to top their hand-tossed pizzas before cooking in their large brick oven. Price to product I would say they were a decent value. I felt like the pricing was an ok value for the meal delivered. I will be returning to try their pizza another night, and will be bringing family here in the future to try their entrees.
Service is the worst, food okay and overpriced. Managers arguing with staff in front of us, you can tell its complete chaos (not behind) the scenes. From the beginning to wine being spilt all over my friend the night was a disaster. 3rd time is not a charm. Too bad, I really was hoping for a good new restaurant downtown. 🙁
