A wonderful setting by the waterfront, live music, lovely helpful staff, good food and a view to die for. Definitely the place to be at sunset.
Great atmosphere and service. The server, John, went out of his way to make us comfortable and give very personal service. On this second visit, we went with lighter fare. The flavors were still excellent with less exotic food. Sandwiches and salad, with seafood flare were very well done. Entrees, previously cooked to preference; seafood medley and surf ‘n turf kabobs were spectacular. Appetizers have exceptional flavors and desserts are satisfying. Feeding the Tarpons off the dock, extends the experience. Value pushes rating up 0.5. Definitely will visit again.
Sundowners is a horrible restaurant! I am positive that the waiter, Matthew, tainted our food. Justin, the manager, did absolutely nothing to try to make this right. I would hate for someone else’s vacation to be ruined like ours was. We have never had such a terrible experience at a restaurant. Matthew even attempted to add money to the amount of tip we left.
Sundowners. Its a downer alright! there are a lot better places to spend your money, try key largo fisheries. i ordered blacken snapper and there was nothing spicy about it but the fish was swimming in oil. this place is a rip off!
Went there for dinner with family, including vegetarian. Food was very good, including the vegetarian selection. Service was good as well. I’d recommend it and go back there.
Don’t be fooled. Food is mediocre at best and severely overpriced!
Poor service and poor food execution. I should have known I was in for problems as soon as I walked in – the server was leaning over the bar, chatting with the bar tender – she didn’t realize we were standing there for roughly 5 minutes. I don’t think she was intentionally rude – just aloof. She finally noticed us and sat us at our table. We arrived just in time for the sunset – the only redeeming quality I’m able to point out. The server took our drink order and came back rapidly with the order – she told us she would return soon to check on us. Eventually we asked another server to send our server to us so we could order. She was promptly summoned from her post holding down the bar top to take our order – very apologetic that she had neglected us – again not intentionally rude – just aloof. Being in the keys for the first time, I decided to try the conch fritters – there seemed to be very little conch and what was there was very tough and rubbery – like eating a donut spiked rubberband. My wife ordered the bleu cheese-stuffed fried green olives. They tasted okay but I didn’t taste the bleu cheese. They were accompanied by a fig jelly that certainly came from a jar and was messily splattered on the plate. After the poor execution of the appetizers I decided I didn’t want to pay the high price of their seafood dishes. I ordered a burger and figured I’d enjoy the great view (amazing). I ordered it medium hoping it wouldn’t be dried out. It came out quickly – too quickly. Instead of having a warm pink center, it was raw throughout. I ate the edges because it seemed like good quality beef and had a nice smoky from the wood grill – hickory I think. My wife had the bayou pasta and it was okay – very large portion. Again, we had to ask another server about our bill. I could tell that she, too, was frustrated with our server. I would have paid a fee to sit on the dock to enjoy the sunset – unfortunately what should have been a nominal fee turned into $100 for a sunset, poorly executed food and a no-show server. I suspect that my experience would have been better with a different server. I too, saw the cross-eyed cat that other reviewers have mentioned.
