Best sushi in the bay area, order of the black board! If you get a spicy tuna roll, get it 7. Other then that, please try more then just cali roll or tampa roll or any of the usual, get sashimi or nigiri try the actual cuts of fish and try something new, this place has some of the best eel in the area. It is really a restaurant that those who know how to order will enjoy more then any place in the area, and those who get the same stereotypical rolls will have a stereotypical experience.

I have lived in the Tampa Bay Area for 9 years. I’ve been in search of a sushi restaurant that consistently has the freshest fish available. That search has involved at least 25 different sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. Normally, you have to be careful which day of the week you order sashimi based on when the fish is delivered. Kaisen simply has THE FRESHEST FISH I have had by far. The sushi chef also knows how to properly present sashimi, which isn’t always a given. Their sushi rice is perfect, which again, isn’t always the case. I ordered salmon toro sashimi and it was deliciously fresh and buttery. The Yellowtail, Tuna, Eel, Spicy Tuna Roll (lots of tuna and not too much rice), and Volcano Roll were all delicious and very fresh. I highly recommend the Volcano Roll. The chef will make it to order based on the spice level you specify. The cream cheese and crab combo on top of the Volcano Roll was amazing, and the California Roll underneath had big slices of avocado, which makes or breaks a traditional Cali Roll. Also, the service was first class. If you are looking for the freshest fish in the area, you can’t go wrong with Kaisen sushi!

Service is outstanding, and the atmosphere is fun. The chefs are hilarious and it was a great place to hang out and eat some quality sushi.

Late Dinner Disappointment. One of the appealing criteria of a small hole in the wall sushi restaurant is that the owner is also head sushi chef. The would mean he takes pride in the overall taste and presentation of the food, right? Wrong. Before I get into the food, I would like to start with ambiance and customer service. After sitting down, our waitress passed us time and again until we were finally able to order-our drinks, it had been so long I figured I would put in the food too. I went with something safe-Wayne’s spicy tuna, and a special mango tuna. The rolls looked like they had maybe fallen on the floor, been dusted off and put back on the plate the way they were arranged-no this did not really happen. The mango roll had large chunks of mango the overpowered the tuna. It lacked some components that the waitress said it would bring-overall a big disappointment. The spicy tuna was slightly different than one may expect-sort of diced in a spicy sauce. They were both good to average at best. Let me say that I have eaten at many sushi restaurants-this is a place for new-to-sushi’ s who really don’t know any better. If you were hoping to get a warm towel, quick service, and some breathing room-this may not be the place for you.

Dedicated to Tradition. Kaisen is a traditional mom & pop style sushi bar (Izakaya style) that you will find in Japan. All recipes and sauces are made on location. Ryo (owner & head sushi chef) is passionate about honoring Japanese sushi traditions.I have been eating at Kaisen’s since they opened back in the early 90’s at their original location (which is now part of Lowe’s parking lot). My favorite dishes are: Miso soup, Green hot tea, Seafood sunomono, Geso, Stuffed mushrooms, Tuna tataki, Spicy tuna chop-chop, Zuke tuna,Yellow tail (Chinese style, not on the menu) and Red bean ice cream.Don’t be afraid to ask for a custom creation using a favorite fish.Check Kaisen’s website for daily specials.www.kaisensushitampa.comThis is a Japanese owned & operated restaurant.
