(6/9/2017) Grabbed a few to-go items from the bakery counter for lunch (and snacking later). It’s like traveling into another country when you step through the doors, culinary adventure abounds. There’s pretty much no directions in English, so I bumbled my way through. On the left side it looks like cafeteria-style ordering with hot entrees and sides, maybe there’s wait service at the eat-in tables, I couldn’t tell, but a few tables had real plates and flatware. I walked up to the line in front of a case of deep-fried savory pastry/dumplings/empanadas. I know enough food-Spanish to figure out what I want to eat and pointing seems to work just fine. Tried a yellow masa empanada stuffed with salt cod and queso blanco (melty white cheese, like Monterey Jack), very tasty. The masa dough was surprisingly very sweet, soft on the inside, fried to crispy on the outside, and corn-y. A ropa vieja (braised, shredded beef) flat empanada (calzone shaped) was flavorful, but somewhat dry, shell was baked to a nice even brown and light and flaky. Another style, a football-shaped empanada was savory masa filled with seasoned ground beef and melty yellow cheese (like Velveeta), was dense, hearty, filling. Each were under $2, it was a steal. Looking to make my way through the whole case eventually.
