2017/06/08It was motorcycle night at Ace Cafe. One of our clients suggested Ace Cafe, which is the new Orlando restaurant offspring of the Ace Cafe eatery north of London England. They have various car and bike meets in their parking lot, and Thursday evenings is apparently Bike Night at the Ace. They have cruise meets, van meets, Harley meets, truck meets, Ford meets, and many more. Check out their website for more details (acecafeusa.com/meets-events). By the time we finished our dinner, there were probably close to 100 motorcycles on the sidewalk beside the parking lot. They also have a small motorcycle gallery and museum at one end of the second levelMy two colleagues and I were there for dinner. I would call the items on the menu elevated diner fare. They have burgers, sandwiches, salads and much more. Some of the items have a little twist on the typical diner choices. We started out by sharing the Hummus Trio Platter. Red Pepper Hummus, Avocado Hummus, and Lemon Hummus, accompanied by two of toasted pita triangles, tortilla chips or the gluten free yucca cheese breadsticks (for a $1 upcharge). We passed on the tortilla chips and chose the other two. The yucca breadsticks were interesting; while they were the shape of breadsticks, they did not have any bread. They were light and fluffy, and were very good at dipping into the hummus. The three hummus dips had very similar texture, but you could taste the difference. For my main course I chose the Fish & Chips. The fish was North Atlantic Haddock dipped in Yuengling beer batter, and then fried to a golden brown. The batter had a nice crunch, and the fish was tender and flaky. The menu listed fries and mushy peas as the sides, but our server offered any of the sides, so I switched the fries with their Apple Slaw. The coleslaw had a vinegar-based dressing, with small, diced bits of Granny Smith apple, adding a little crunch. For me the mushy peas and coleslaw were just okay. The one problem I had with the dish was that it was served in a heavy frame, black wire basket, with a paper liner. That type of serving vessel is not suitable for anything that needs to be cut with a knife, in my opinion. Also, the knife cut through the paper, allowing some of the cooking oil to seep out on to the table. We were pretty full after our main course, but our server tried to talk us into having their Bread Pudding. Since one of my colleagues experienced a few minor service errors along the way (wrong dressing, wrong topping, missing topping), she leveraged those into a free Bread Pudding, and our server happily obliged. What arrived was a massive cube of bread pudding, topped with a good scoop of Salted Caramel Ice Cream. It was very good, but too much for the three of us to finish.
