By far the best food in Tampa. Fresh ingredients, unique flavors, a varied menu, good-size portions, great daily specials, excellent wine selections – we never get tired of it! Thank you BT!

Mediocre and overpriced. This restaurant would be much better if executed properly. Escargot en croute? Not en croute, but rather baked (stewed?) in sauce with a side of pasty sticks. There were some appetizers I tasted from others in my table that I liked, such as the tuna appetizer. But all of the entrees were simply bland. The Chipirones did not taste like much and the squid was very tough. The french lamb stew was bland. The vegan curry dish (Monk’s Stew?) also very bland, tasting nothing like nothing but coconut milk. The bread was not good french bread. The wine list was pricey, and the wines by the glass were marked up so high that you could buy a whole bottle for the price of one glass of sub-par wine. The muted flavors of the faux-French/fusion food does not justify the high price of this restaurant.

Mediocre. Food was okay, but portions were tiny, and not nearly delicious enough to justify the high price.

Always Outstanding, Then and Now. I simply do not understand the lack-luster reviews of this restaurant. I have been going to BT’s restaurants for over a decade – since she was over on Gandy Blvd, I continued at her fabulous restaurant in Hyde Park, and still go whenever I can at the current location. I have had food around the world and work for a cooking TV show and her genuine french-vietnamese cuisine is still a benchmark for fine dining. I also have it on good information that a few celebrity chefs frequent her restaurant whenever they are in town (and continue to do so). If you don’t like the decor that is one thing- I enjoy the ambiance but maybe it is not for everyone, but it would be truly difficult to understand any review of the food other than fantastic. I find the flavors bold yet balanced, the menu diverse and interesting, and the staff always pleasant. My biggest problem with the restaurant is choosing what to eat. I would really encourage anyone new to her restaurant to give it a chance – you will not be disappointed! The Bo tai chan and Tuna tai chan are staples for me, as well as the spring rolls. I also have an addiction to her peking duck which is the best I’ve had anywhere. Any entree is a slam-dunk. BT is also an amazing person if you get a chance to say hello.

Overpriced. Average food but above average prices. There are better options in south Tampa.

Collectively Meh. I’ve tried but I just don’t get the BT appeal. The Hanoi beef pho was somewhat flavorful but not outstanding. Equally unimpressive was the grilled pork bun noodle salad bowl; of which mine had tough to chew, cold, and not exactly grilled pork. Likewise, no one could explain the mostly lobsterless $35 lobster roll. Also, since I’m a spring roll lover and BT’s are eerily similar to those at Fresh Market, I’ll take the latter’s $7 dozen instead of 3 for $9 at BT. Same for the tuna; crack open a can of Chicken of the Sea and save your cash. Sorry, but nothing on our Tampa table warranted the Manhattan prices. As for the pseudosleek dining room, the lucite chairs are uncomfortable and the beige pallet is too sterile. The outdoor dining area is next to a major street and is entirely too noisy. The patio trees should be topped with tiny lights rather than have a lone tree trunk embellished with a gaudy tube lighting. Further, the streetside signage harkens a strip club rather than fine dining. On the plus side, I did not experience poor service as have other reviewers. The wait staff was friendly and reasonably knowledgeable of the menu. However, more attention should be paid to the menu and website as both are riddled with spelling errors.

Top echelon for Tampa. I eat at BT every week or two for the past year +. I’ve been waiting to see if I experience any of the flaws in described in negative reviews. So far, I have not. There has been a track record of consistency all this time. BT is probably not for everyone. It is not cheap. But what you do get are incredibly fresh preparations with soul. It is clear to me that corners have not been cut and the dishes are unique, have intensity, depth and yet lightness that does not overwhelm you. This is a combination that for me, puts BT among the best in our town.
