Wonderful, small and family owned. Chili con queso is unique and spicy and wonderful! Guacamole is fresh and home made as are the beans and meats and all chips and shells !
Taco bell is better ( I used to live near mexico ). By far this place was a huge disappointment on Tyndall Parkway. I had high hopes that a mexican food place would be near Tyndall. Sombrero is on the very bottom of the list even adding fast food. This place has by far the worst service, food, flavor, music and isnt clean. They should just rent a bulldozer and bury this place. The goats behind the restaurant eat better food then they serve. The owner doesnt care either. If you mention the taste of the food they get angry then wont go do anything for your table the rest of your trip. So your best bet is to stay away from this place. Lets hope the 90 year old lady that eats there and pays the staff will stop going. They need to just stop trying if they do not hire a cook. Lets face it, most of us eat a places because the food taste good. I dont care what it looks like or the music or the chair you sit in while you eat. This place fails to deliver any quality of mexican food. I dont know why there isnt a mexican person that cooks there? I guess some owners cant let go of staff. I am sure there is better mexican food at sonic drive in! STAY AWAY:
I have read many reviews online… however this is the 1st time I am making a distinct effort to write one of my own due to the level of BAD this… place is. Three of my buddies and I went to Sombreros today for lunch, as other reviews state, u get chips out of a bag, premade fried corn tortillas(very weird) and crackers with salsa from a bottle. I was very weirded out and sketchy at that point but we all said we wld give the food a try. I got a $5 taco salad with $1.50 sour cream and $2.50 guacamole…the salad was no bigger than my fist, the taco meat was plain, the sc was 2 little packets, and the guac was brownish in a tiny little plastic cup. My buddies said all of their stuff tasted like frozen food reheated. We all went back to work and told everyone how horrible it was and we all felt sick. The establishment looked gross…old weird decor and a dead animal head as you walk in… the lady server who took our money was sketchy…you can tell she knows it isn’t legit and she is not proud of it. Please don’t waste your time. I felt gross after going there seriously.
Sombrero is an American owned family restaurant. I believe to enjoy this restaurant you need to know what to expect. I would describe their food as tex mex rather than authentic Mexican. For those people seeking the same food that is at every other Americanized Mexican restaurant around the corner, you will not find that here. For most of is that frequent Sombrero, we absolutely love it. There is something this little mom and pop place that keeps us coming back week after week. Their salsa is homemade and is delicious but very hot. If it is too spicy, all you have to do is say so and they can give you a mix that is not as spicy. They also fry their own tostadas to dip your chips, so if you prefer the taste of those, which I do, just tell them that is what you prefer over the generic chips. Something unique to this restaurant is their homemade guacamole made from fresh avocados. It is delicious! Their tacos are great and their version of chili con queso is unlike any you have ever tried, but delicious as well. You have to give this place a chance if you have an open mind. If your grandmother were going to cook you a Mexican dinner, this is what it would be. Sombrero has been open for over 25 years in bay county and has certainly stood the test time. I hope we can have them around for 25 more! Go and support this American owned local family business!
Only been there once and not going back. Like another review said the chips are poured out from a bag right in front of you. To top if off they are generic chips. If I wanted to do that I would buy a back of Tostitos and stay at home. Menu items do not taste from scratch but taste like Stouffer’s frozen dinners. From what I could tell this Mexican restaurant isn’t even run by Mexicans.
Too expensive for canned food/ sanitation issues. My husband and I decided to try this place for dinner and boy I wish we didn’t. The chips brought to the table with salsa were cold and dumped from the bag to the basket, salsa was good but very spicy. I ordered a mixed plate with a taco, cheese enchilada, tamale, rice and beans. The food did arrive blisteringly hot, but for 10 dollars and change I expected more food. The enchilada was about 5 inches long and the tamale was maybe 4 inches long and as wide as the thich end of a skinny carrot. The beans were sweet? Never had sweet refried beans before, ad the rice was dry as a bone and hard. DH’s food was no better, the burrito was like the ones you buy in Walmart for 4.00 for 8. Worst than that when we were paying, we caught a glimpse of the kitchen and saw a lady scooping Hormel beans out of a can with her hands, no gloves. I don’t believe I’ll be going back there.
This was an awful experience. The potions are small for the price, they do not offer chicken and the products seemed to be reheated. The salsa may have been a strong point but was served with cheap corn chips and tostada shells. My meal was ~ $15 w/o a tip…do yourself a favor and get three meals at Taco Bell instead…it will definitely be better and in reasonable time.
