We just went on Last Saturday and it was about lunchtime, and we needed to pick up some seafood from Joe Pattis. We had just left Shoreline, getting olive oil and we were hungry. We cut through the neighborhood that is beside Joe Pattis and saw the restaurant, and decided to give it a try. We got out of the car and walked in.I have to tell you that it seemed like we walked into the twilight zone, like we just walked into the 70s, but not in a bad way at all, this was great! We actually had an amazing time. We have both lived through the 70s and remember them fondly, we just were not expecting it to be so very authentic. The decor looks as though it was from the same timeframe and has not been updated much, if at all. It was all complemented by a soundtrack from somewhere in the early 80..nice!I remember traveling around the country in the back of the family Oldsmobile and stopping at Shoneys Big Boys and Howard Johnson’s and felt like I was right there, 8 years old, eating fried something with my sister, Mother and Father. It was really cool. Some of the other places that give the same nostalgic vibe would be Chets, Taco Ole House, and The Oyster Barn, plum packed with locals, like it is a secret only Pensacolians can know about, even though Andrew Zimmern and the couple from Road Food have all swept through town and done features on those very places, including this one.Oh, how was the food? It is good, really good. I do not eat much fried food, ( there are many non fried options on the menu I should point out) so when I can avoid it I do, but this place is all in, up to your elbows fried everything, and they do it right! We got the jalapeno hushpuppies, a side of fried oysters, a bowl of gumbo, coleslaw, a grouper poboy, and onion rings! I may have left something out, but we committed….really committed, and had a great time with our own little sample party. Everything was good, and very tasty, the gumbo has a solid roux, and lots of seafood, the poboy was authentic and delicious with great bread, and I poured the tarter sauce on each place I was going to bite, the coleslaw, and the onion rings were great too. The hushpuppies were good, not great and maybe the least favorite of the meal. I have to admit that though the food was fried, it was not heavy, and did not taste of oil. You know I hear that fat is back, like eggs and butter, so maybe I should not shun fried food so much. Please to not take this review as a bash on this Pensacola jewel, it is quite the opposite, I love places that can really take me back and make me feel young again, and I did not have to travel all the way to Walt Disney World to have that experience! I only wish I had gone to Captain Joeys sooner (my Pensacola native friends have told me to go for decades). I have learned my lesson.-B-

Fried Seafood in Pensacola. Joe Patti’s Seafood restaurant has very fresh seafood, as you would expect being on the Gulf. But the restaurant basically fries everything and I couldn’t really detect any seasonings to speak of. On the other hand, the food was tasty. The hushpuppies were very good. The fries were so-so. The decor is basic American diner. There’s no alcohol and they only use disposable plasticware rather than real silverware. The prices are fine. I had the grouper basket with fries and hushpuppies. My wife has the blackened salmon salad which was the only non-fried item that anyone at our table ordered. If you don’t mind fried food, like fresh fish, and are looking for a simple lunch, Joe Patti’s is just fine. If these things do not appeal to you, stay away.
