Try another restaurant. We had our best friend here over the Thanksgiving weekend and she wanted to treat us to a special dinner. We wish we had chosen another restuarant. First, I must say, the mussels were excellent. So good that we ordered a second helping. But from there, the meal went downhill. We each ordered a different seafood dish and we tasted each others. They all tasted the same. The shrimp and scallop dishes came with only 3 shrimp or scallops. The scallops were served on a base of pureed cauliflower. While the puree was tasty, there was hardly any on the plate. The fish dish was wrapped with something that they said was like prosciutto. Whatever it was, it was tough, dry and extremely salty. You could not taste the flavor of the fish for the salt. It was served with 4 brussels sprouts. Very disappointing for us and our friend…especially when paying about $25/plate.

Almost there!. I recently tried Trabue with a guest and was a little reticent after reading some of the reviews.I came to the conclusion that the negative reviews were leftovers from the previous Tapas One. The only negatives I found were the state of the booths which border on early Dennys and the disconnect between the main restaurant and the dining garden which is exquisite, but you have to walk through the car park to get to it! The food is outstanding if a little expensive. I had the mussels which were perfect and we all had the braised beef which i highly reommend. An almost perfect addition to Punta Gorda. Just a little work on the booths and the link to the garden and this place will be a real gem!

Terrific Meal in Punta Gorda!. Had a terrific meal here early on a Sat. night on a visit to PG. This restaurant has two buildings – a slick, modernesque main building on Marion Ave., and a cottage (used mostly for private functions) on 41S, connected by a shared garden area. My date and I sat in a booth by the bar in the main building. Our server was young, fresh-faced, and eager, though she didn’t know much about the wines or bar items available. She called in waitress-cum-dessert chef Josie (about whom, more later) to help her/us as needed. Trabue has a decent-to-good wine selection, including a fair number by the glass (which my date appreciated), and several good sipping rums (my choice). The menu is upscale nouvelle cuisine, with prices to match. I don’t mind paying for good food, and we were not disappointed. There was a good variety of tasty-looking menu items, such that we had a few hard decisions to make. For a shared appetizer, we settled on the PEI mussels in a white wine broth with peppers, capers, and sourdough bead for broth-sopping. The mussels were plump, tender, and cooked to perfection, and the vegetables in the broth allowed us to justify an extra order of bread to sop up most of the excess. Delicious – an excellent start! My date ordered one of the day’s specials, a (baked?) mahi-mahi, crispy outside and tender and moist inside, on a bed of wilted spinach and a generous helping of slightly spiced red peppers -which I loved! (We share.) Though I was disappointed that the Atlantic salmon wasn’t available, I was very pleased with the filet, ordered Pittsburgh rare – hot, juicy and tender, A great steak, The house also permitted me to decline the usual potatoes and to order instead grilled whole baby carrots, with a light candy glaze, and grilled zucchini, both of which were perfectly prepared and very tasty. The dish also came with asparagus, not grilled, which was OK but not great – I’m not a big asparagus fan, and it was the only item we didn’t consume completely. If I were to order the same dish again, I’d ask for the asparagus to be grilled along with the zukes. The chef has a great touch with the grill. As usual, we asked for a reading of the dessert menu. Other than the omission of ice cream (which I love), the selection was magnificent – again leading to hard choices. (Nice to have!) Breaking with our usual share-one custom, we decided to order two desserts – the Grand Marnier creme brulee for me, and the flourless chocolate cake with strawberry gelee accents for my date. i will admit to being a bit of a creme brulee snob; when it comes to this most delicate and caloric dessert, only the softest, creamiest, most delicately flavorful creme and brilliant, crisp, lightly burnt topping will do. Exactly what Josie at Trabue delivered – one of the very best I’ve ever had. My date’s flourless chocolate cake was just right – medium consistency, wonderful chocolate flavor, but light enough not too feel overly dense in the mouth or afterwards. I’m not a huge chocolate fan, bit it may have been, again, the best such chocolate dessert I’ve ever had. Outstanding! So much so that I did something I’ve never done before, as she was on the floor – I went over and gave her a personal thank you with a hug, which she gracefully accepted, as some of her kitchen mates smiled nearby. Josie is a treasure! In terms of downsides, not much to say. Service was leisurely – but that didn’t bother my date and me. The bill for two with a (generous) tip came to $150, but for the occasional splurge, well-worth it. Next time in Punta Gorda, I will return for sure. 5 stars!

Good in every way!. The food is wonderful – local / fresh / excellently prepared and presented. The decor in unique and very appealing. The atmosphere is friendly and attentive. It’s our favorite Punta Gorda place to dine. Love it.

Sept 2012. Went to their garden late Friday night as we were attracted to the spanish music. Food was good but overpriced. Was charged for a full mini bottle of champagne when they only gave me a glass…$18 worth! Noticed it the following day but never had the time to go back and complain. Never..it left a lasting impression!

Awesomesauce. I have been in this business for twenty five years and I admittedly geek out on trying new places. Trabue is far and away one of the best experiences I have ever had. First of all, it is gorgeous. The decor is chic, yet funky. Tons of personality and a very relaxed atmosphere. The staff are attentive and gracious. Alex, the GM is very cool and you can tell that his crew like working for him. Chef Keith suggested a Cabernet that was stunning. I had the cheese plate, because I kind of have a cheese problem and boy howdy was I enabled. The plate was a very generous portion and had a great variety of very nice cheeses. Then came the pork belly. Perfectly done, laced with a pumpkin puree, it tasted like Autumn in Pennsylvania.Perhaps, though, the most refreshing thing to see, was the Chef coming out to talk to all the customers. I have, as a manager, had to hide clean chef coats to bypass that excuse for my boys not wanting to go out on the floor. The personal touch is key.I can recommend Trabue enough. Go there, eat it , love it.
