An interesting training ground. Im not going to rave about the food and Im not going to rave about the service. I will rave about the concept. Bistro 502 is part of Sarasota Country Technical Institute (SCTI) Culinary Arts Department at Beneva Rd and Proctor Rd. It is essentially a classroom where students learn the various functions of a restaurant. It looked like an excellent training ground where students can get experience in a controlled setting with guidance and support. A very nice controlled setting, they have a large open kitchen and spacious dining area. The inexperience was obvious but the desire to do well was also obvious. Of course, the food is important as well. The menu is limited, a couple of soups, a few sandwiches, a pasta dish, an entre, and dessert offerings. I started with the Gazpacho soup. It lacked a crunchiness but was nicely chilled and had a good flavor. I finished with the entre, a Seafood Crepe au gratin stuffed with lobster, shrimp and scallops and served with ratatouille. The ratatouille was excellent. The crepe was an inexpensive dish that did not live up to its impressive description. We were not surprised, nor were we disappointed. A nice amount of melted cheese on top helped offset the texture and even the flavor of the crepe stuffing. Not only did we have a nice lunch, we left feeling we helped out, that we played a small role today in the success of a program to help prepare students for the real world. You dont get that feeling by stopping at your favorite feeding spot.Bistro 502 is open to the public for lunch on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11-1 for the school year from September to May. The menu changes roughly monthly. Try something different and at the same time support this great concept.
