An Akron, OH institution, somehow in Florida!. Stricklands ice cream is an Akron, OH institution, serving its delicious ice cream there since 1936. Somehow, one of these ended up in Sarasota, FL, too! This is awesome, since I don’t have to drive back to Ohio to get it, now that I have moved to Florida! Flavors are limited; they serve chocolate, vanilla, and two other flavors, which vary daily. Grape, fresh banana, and raspberry chunk are quite popular. Don’t let the limited number of flavors fool you, though… these are delicious, and they can be made into sundaes, or have goodies mixed in. The popularity of this place is not in its selection, it’s in the fact that this is darned good ice cream.

A nice spot. I had thought this little storefront was just an ice cream place but I noticed recently they have a large sign saying they also have soups, salads and sandwiches. Today I stopped by for lunch. They had a couple of lunch specials, a Chicago Dog and a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. I went with the dog and was not disappointed. The dog was on a poppy seed roll and was dressed out exactly as I would have expected. It was good, too.The lunch special includes a small cone. I upgraded to a small Turtle Sundae, soft vanilla ice cream with fudge, caramel, whipped cream, and that iconic cherry on top. I liked that too. The menu board only shows dessert offerings but they do have several sandwiches and Paninis. As for the ice cream, they only have a few flavors. This is not a rush in and grab some food kind of place, patience is a good plan. There are a few tables inside and one or two outside on the sidewalk. Stricklands is located in The Colonnades Plaza (where Persnickety Cat used to be) along Bee Ridge just east of US 41.
