Pleasantly surprised. Sometimes I do not get to choose where we go. An Indian restaurant would not be very high on my list, but tonight Im glad we tried Chutneys. They actually offer two cuisines, Indian and Middle Eastern, and they have pick 2 (platter) lists for both cuisines. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked both my Middle Eastern picks. The Stuffed Cabbage was good, the ground turkey almost a paste. I also had a Pastichio, todays version with ground Chicken and a puff pastry crust. I really liked that dish, and recommend it to those, like me, a little outside their element. It may even be an excellent dish for everyone else.A Greek Salad and warm bread were good starters. We were cheerfully greeted when we walked in and were well taken care of throughout the meal. The place is a little small, I counted 12 tables and a half dozen seats along a counter. We arrived about 6pm and it filled up while we were dining. I liked the dcor, hieroglyphics on the walls, a row of small elephant statues on a high shelf. White paper on the tables may be practical but unless they supply crayons it seems a little tacky. Fortunately, Chutneys provides crayons. Parking can be a challenge along Hillview St.
Nothing to Write Home About. This place is OK, not bad, but not great. The Thai Chicken Eggroll app was good as was the greek salad, but the Indian dishes we ordered were a bit bland. The Tandoori Chicken was not real tandoori and had very little flavor. The Chicken Masala was super bland. Lamb VIndaloo was OK. All in all a mediocre place. I’ve had waaaaay better Indian at other places.
My favorite Indian and Middle Eastern place! Always consistent and delicious. Great cozy atmosphere. The husband and wife team do an amazing job of serving their customers. We love the experience, the food is the best!
Great Food and Great Hosts. Ash and Denise are adorable and great hosts making everyone feel special. Ash always has my favorite beverage on the table within minutes of arriving and has a lot of fun choosing a special beer for my husband. It is a great place to take people that are nervous about ethnic foods or spicy foods as you can mix and match items/ ethnicities so everyone gets what they want. The house salad is worth a meal alone and the curries are our favorite. I would not take stock in the crazy rant posted on this website. Their review is way off the mark and unbalanced. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding and someone’s emotions are out of control. I think it would be wise of the angry reviewer to spend their discretionary dollars on an anger management course rather than dining out. The owner’s wife is a completely charming and very witty!
Don’t waste your time or money. On Valentines day the terrible excuse for customer service ruined my whole evening. My girlfriend and I went out, for what was supposed to be a nice evening, and that terrible woman at Chutneys did her best to ruin it. She was rude when we ordered drinks. She was impatient when my girlfriend was ordering food. And, it feels like she is always talking down to her customers. Sarasota is full of bad customer service but this place really adds a few more feet to the cesspool… rather it is the cesspool. I will never go back. I can not in good conscience stand by and let people throw their money away to be treated like garbage. It doesn’t matter how good their food might be as the service was so terrible that we left after we finished a beer. Bottomline… I could not be more upset over a dining experience.
A Title. I have been here many times, and probably never had a bad meal. As I remember, the menu is split with indian- and middle-eastern-inspired dishes (although I’d hate to misrepresent the menu/concept). If you’re reading this trying to find a place to eat in the next few minutes, give it a try; this place has very tasty food.Oh yeah, and you can draw on the (paper) table cloth.
Simply Fantastic. We have been visiting Chutney, etc. since 2002 at least every other month. We actually moved from Osprey, in part, to be closer to Chutney. We now spend most of our time in Bradenton, but still manage to visit every other month. Ash and Denise are fantastic and the food is outstanding. The special entrees are amazing but we are usually too full to enjoy dessert. Although not Indian, the ribs are simply delicious. We brought our 26 year old nephew who had never eaten Indian food and was quite apprehensive. After the meal, he now considers Chutney as one of his favorite restaurants and often accompanies us.Dan and Renae Shattuck
