Won’t be returning. After reading the 2/14/14 review, I decided to express my thoughts on the deterioration of Hillview Grill. We have enjoyed this restaurant for quite a few years. The owner/manager?, always dressed in khakis and a blue shirt, made us feel welcome. The waitstaff were friendly. The service excellent. The menu was wonderful and the finished product delicious. Now, to the problem…on New Year’s Eve we met another couple there for dinner. I had been told, when making reservations, that the regular menu would be used. We hadn’t been there in a while, so I was unaware of the changes. The host was rude, the waitperson wasn’t much better. The food was mediocre at best. The only vegetable available was string beans. Whatever happened to the creamed spinach, asparagas, etc.? We didn’t complain as it was a festive evening and we had guests. We just made the decision to never return. There are too many good restaurants in Sarasota so it is not necessary to revisit one that does not care!

Pretty good place. We felt our visit got off to a less then excellent start when the host very businesslike asked if we had reservations (we did not) and told us we would have to sit at one of the hightops. We picked one. Just to wrap this story up there were tables unused the entire time we were there, maybe they had some no shows. We found that part of our visit odd.Our server was friendly and very good. I liked her.I ordered the Gazpacho Soup and the Hillview Grill Burger. I did not care for the soup much, it was nicely chilled and crunchy but lacked a refreshing taste. I liked the burger, a thick stack of meat, cheese, mushrooms, bacon, slices of tomato and raw onion, and lettice. Juicy and messy, the bun had no chance keeping this all together. My favorite for the night, though, were the house made chips, crunchy and delicious. Our server even brought a container of a dipping sauce (I think ranch dressing) that really worked well.Finding parking on Hillview St. can be a problem and was for us tonight, but Hillview Grill does provide valet parking..
Good food, service, prices. Very nice, relaxed setting. Just a nice neighborhood spot, with good food and little pretention.We opted to go for small plates this time, and they were very good.We had the Boom Boom Shrimp……..creamy with a nice touch of spice, over a bed of shreadded cabbage. Excellent. Next came the Steak Flatbread. Steak with tomatoes, green pepper, carmelized onions, and a spicy sour cream drizzle. Very nice. We had the PEI mussels in a wine, garlic, basil, and lemon sauce. Good choice. You can also get this with a marinara sauce. We finished with the steak tacos………….probably the wrong choice. Same as the steak flatbread without the cheese. Next time, we would have the fish tacos. They also had a nice deal of $20 (probably during the slow season). You get a drink, a choice of main courses (believe there were around 8 choices), and gelato for dessert. Nice………….but, we like the variety of small plates.Very good service……………Including a beer, bottled water, tax, and tip, it was under $55. A very nice meal.
Love going to Hillview grill. I go at least once a week the food is always good probably the best grouper & burgers in sarasota
Never a bad meal!. We have never had a bad meal or bad service at Hillview Grill. Our favorite dining experience in Sarasota, through old ownership and new ownership. Tremendous value, with great summer specials, small & full plates, and wonderful variety of soups.
Wonderful spot! A must when down in the village. Best pot-stickers!!
