Wouldn’t recommend to a friend…enemy maybe.. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone who I actually liked. While the setting was beautiful, the food was mediocre at best. The service was average and wasn’t anything to brag about, especially considering how slow the evening was. I’ll never go here again. I wouldn’t even consider buying a groupon for this restaurant…it was that bad. If this is how they treat their customers I feel bad for the help.
Wonderful setting — Spotty Food. The setting is beautiful and romantic. In the artsy Towles Court section off of downtown Sarasota, you have a choice of veranda or inside dining. The veranda was full, but we had a beautiful corner table in the house. Very romantic with soft music and tasteful decorations and white tablecloths.Quite frankly, the setting and atmosphere outshines the food. The ingredients were high quality. Our disappointment was in the variety. Only a few choices of starters and salads, and they just were not that good. My wife started with the shrimp cocktail. All starters have a choice of large or small. She chose the small……….three pieces of shrimp over iceberg lettuce. Boring!!I had the asparagus with feta cheese. Both were excellent. The cheese was very high quality, set off by just a touch of balsamic vinegar. For the main, my wife had the sea scallops and I had the duck breast. All main dishes were served this evening with sides of roasted potatoes and asparagus. The sea scallops were tasteless. The duck breast on the other hand was grilled, with a nice smokey flavor, and sliced thin over a cherry sauce reduction. Quite nice.Service was good, and unobtrusive. As I mentioned, nice touches all around, such as warm bread served in a nice crock wrapped in a beautiful tea towel. But, the menu needs greater variety and more imagination……..and, the food is inconsistent. In our book, a great restaurant has to have 1) atmosphere, 2) great service, and 3) great foodLavanda has two out of three. A great Savor Sarasota visit. Lavanda participated in a Savor Sarasota promotion where for a couple of weeks people can enjoy a meal from a limited menu for less than what a typical meal would cost (prix fixe). We went there for dinner and were much pleased. I selected items that were also on their regular menu.I started with a Mozzarella and Tomato Sauce appetizer, melted cheese on tomato sauce with oil. Following that were Pork Medallions, served with a Plum Sauce. The pork was tender, the sauce subtle but noticeable. Both the appetizer and entre were outstanding. I particularly liked the potatoes, cooked to perfection and nicely seasoned. For dessert I had a Lemon Souffl, just a little tart with spots of jelly and whipped cream to add the sweet. My only complaint was portion size. This was definitely a quality meal, not a quantity meal. It was all so good and I selfishly just wanted more. This restaurant gets an I LIKE IT vote from me in capital letters.
Most romantic at night…. My advice – go at night and sit outside on the veranda to eat your most scrumptious meal. The beautiful garden district of Sarasota is lovely with exotic plants and tiny lights to enhance your dining experience. The food was very good, attentive service. Special Gallery Walk every third Friday in this charming artist community.
