Tres bien !. Lolita Tartare is the second restaurant for the popular French breakfast / lunch restaurant Cest La Vie on Main St. My expectations were too low, maybe it was the out of the way location at 5th St and Central Ave. We stopped in for lunch today and found an interesting menu of open faced (tartare) and Panini sandwiches.I read in Jack Littman-Quinns blog review the location used to be an art gallery. That history was carried over to Lolitas, at least when naming the various tartare items. I tried and very much enjoyed the Delacroix, named after the 19th century French Master Eugene Delacroix. Van Gogh, Matisse, Dali, and many more names grace the menu.My Delacroix was described as pear, blue cheese, mesclun salad, cream cheese and raisins. As a lover of blue cheese, the cool sweet pear was a perfect match. It was all a perfect combination of ingredients. In typical French fashion, the portion side was not large, but again it was not terribly small. Bring your desire to sample something different, do not come expecting to chow down. We found the service to be very friendly, but if you want something do not be shy about getting someones attention. French music playing in the background and good coffee made this a relaxing lunch stop. They are not as much a breakfast place as Cest la Vie. They still have delicious bakery items, arrive early for the best selection. We tried an Apple Turnover and Chocolate Croissant, knowing they would be very good. They were.I hope their decision to open in the Rosemary District turns out to be a good one and we wish them much success.
Food good, experience not so good. We arrived at 6:30 and were waited on right away. Onion soup and asparagus salad were delicious, my husband’s entree was also very good. What was maddening was the soup, salad, and entree were all $1.00 more on the bill than they were on the menu. Didnt notice it till we had payed and since they seemed like they were short handed and it was 830 by that time we didn’t say anything. Two different parties were seated but walked out because they were never wired on. We will try again later but will keep a close eye on the bill.
Hmmmmm. I had high hopes for this restaurant…. I will start by saying the greens are pretty good… but they need to find another source for their tomatoes, that are ‘almost’ ripe and flavourless. The dressing is spot on. However, charging $13 plus for a shrimp and smoked salmon salad and then using ‘Publix’ grade ring shrimp (if you are from Sarasota you will know what I mean)… and cutting their tails off is not the sign of a good restaurant. I wish them well but they are not going to get by on their ‘French’ factor if they don’t up the food.
