Loved our meal. Had the lobster bisque and flavor was fantastic. Also salmon special perfectly prepared. The beet salad also a winner. We’ll be back for sure.
From the outside, (well, the inside, too) the strip mall ambiance of Coral Gables eatery Mash Potatoes belies chef Scott Wise’s (conceptually) elevated fare of gourmet mashed potatoes, mac-n-cheese (5 different kinds of each), and the occassional South African specialty (Chicken peri peri). My wife and I went for breakfast and ordered something we hadn’t seen in years (not since our last trip to Europe): the full English breakfast. Alas, the eggs were undercooked, the kitchen was out of the traditional beans, and toast arrived late, burned, and only after a reminder. At least the nasty blood pudding was omitted (by design) and the sausage was a healthier chicken version. But, inspired by the eclectic menu, we decided to give the place another chance at lunch a few days later. With the chef himself presiding, the collection of sides that we ordered to share (including the signature porcini truffle mash potatoes), Mediterranean vegetables, pan-seared brussel sprouts, and broccoli and cauliflower mac-n-cheese was brought out slowly, while the wait staff fumbled menus, water-glasses and silverware to the table. The porcini truffle mashed potatoes didn’t seem to have much of either, the seared brussel sprouts were grievously underdone, and, in general, everything was surprisingly bland. For a menu that promises a lot, the food is not stellar, the wait staff is incompetent, and the kitchen is extremely slow to deliver. I’m guessing that the day-to-day restaurant is just something to do in between Mash Potatoes corporate catering gigs. Give this one a pass.
