Seeing many reviews, I was confident but still skeptical about how good it was gonna be. I just got home from my first experience there and I will rate them 5 stars. Most important thing was their cleanliness. The host/server was polite and it didn’t take long to order and receive the food. Maybe 15 minutes or so. FOOD WAS DELICIOUS! Good portions, i was stuffed, and not expensive at all. My fianc, my 1 year old daughter and I all had a combination of ribs, pork sandwhich, fried okra, these corn things and garlic bread. It was awesome. Comfortable home like feel, quiet but not boring, good service, and I met the owner. Real nice guy. I drove 40 minutes and was worth the drive.
Bbq sauce is still good. New owners painted and are eager to please, however service was slow, and ribs were dry. Waffle fries were ok, onion rings and cole slaw pretty good. They shouldn’t have bothered to put dessert on the menu-not worth the calories.
New Owner. This place has been cleaned up nicely and the last 3 barbeque beef sandwiches I have eaten have been wonderful. The meat was juicy and the bread fresh. I crave them now.
Used to be amazing…. About ten years ago, this place was incredible. They had delicious BBQ, big portions for cheap prices. I recently went here with my husband to sadly find that the owners have really let the place go-its not rustic, its dirty. Leaky ceiling, dirty bathrooms. The food for poor quality and even the sweet tea was watered down.So sad to see a once, great BBQ staple of Tampa go down the drain….
Keep driving. Love BBQ lived in Texas for many years. This place is absolutely unclean, the food is tastless and way to expensive for the quality. One of top five of the worste I have ever had.
Don’t like, don’t dislike. I’m indifferent. Wholly Smokes has been around for a long time. I’d been once before but couldn’t remember how I felt about it so gave it a second try. They offer sauces, which I liked, but the pulled pork was a little on the dry side. The baked beans and macaroni and cheese sides were mediocre. I thought their corn nuggets were interesting (baked cream corn) but they tasted like they were re-heated. Still, I felt like their food had potential and want to think I might have gone on a bad day or wrong time of day (?). I’d give it a third try just to be sure.
I keep going there…. I’ve been going to Wholly Smokes since about 1987 since the front porch was open and flies shared your sandwhich. In many ways, the place hasnt changed much. The porch has been closed in, but the tables, the pictures and the paint on the walls is the same. So is the sliced BBQ pork sandwhich–well, actually, it’s a little smaller–but most of the time, it’s lean and is not dry. I’ve probably had a 100 BBQ sliced pork sandwhiches (the ONLY thing I’ve ever had) and maybe 5 have had either dried out meat or a less than fresh bun–not too bad a percentage, but you never really know what you’re gonna get.. Ask for the waffle fries to be a bit crispier (otherwise, they’re anemic-looking. The baked beans are iffy. The waitress is always nice, the drinks always refilled. I’ve had better BBQ, but there is something about this place that draws me back every few months and I’m not really disappointed. Is this a glowing review? Obviously not, but you have to see the place to understand…
