An Unexpected Surprise. We had to wonder about an Italian restaurant opening in the heart of the Sponge Dock section of Tarpon Springs. Amid the Greek and seafood restaurants, Gusto d Amore makes a welcomed addition. As our party of 8 entered the restaurant, we were greeted by Wayne, who also served as our very attentive and able waiter, and shown to out table. The dining room is open and airy, with wood floors and a high, vaulted ceiling. We sat at polished wooden tables and silverware is served in heavy linen napkins. Before our meal, we were visited by owner/chef Giuseppe, who welcomed us himself to his restaurant before retiring to the kitchen to prepare our dinners. He also returned toward the end of the meal to hear how we enjoyed our choices. The Antipasto is near to a religious experience. Teeming with meats, cheeses, and vegetables, it does due homage to its history. The Shrimp on the Barbie is also a recommendation. Somewhat spicy grilled shrimp served on garlic crostini. I was surprised to find Veal Saltimbocca on the menu, and it was excellent, with herbed linguini tossed right into the dish. The Veal Piccata and Grouper Piccata (a daily special) were also excellent, as were the Baked Manicotti and Fshateria (pronounced as if the F does not appear,) a spicy sausage and butterfly pasta concoction.Gusto d Amore is indeed a Taste of Love. And it is evident that every dish is also prepared with love, and skill.
