Visiting from Texas and found this restaurant on google. Reviews seemed good so we stopped for a very late lunch. Wait was 20 minutes on a Tuesday afternoon at almost 3pm. Our waitress was pleasant and prompt and kept our water full. The food however was a little disappointing. Google had a 4+ rating so my expectations were a bit higher. We ordered the Dixie Spectacular. Sadly it was not spectacular. We got the broiled rock shrimp and they were the only thing that was spectacular on the plate. The crab and the lobster were both way overcooked and difficult to shell. We went ahead and had the scallops fried, but they were not hot and crispy, but a bit on the soggy side. Not sure what other people expect out of their seafood to give it such high reviews, but I make better crab at lobster at home than I experienced here. I give it a 2.5 only because the staff was friendly, our waitress was good and the rock shrimp was very good. The rest was a bit ho hum and below average in my book.
(1/27/2018) I had a friend visiting from out of town who had a hankering for seafood. It’s not really fresh unless you’re out by the coast, so we made a hour-long trek to Dixie Crossroads. I have fond memories of coming here when I was growing up for the rock shrimp. The place is very popular, especially on the weekends, our wait was not that bad, 20 minutes and we amused ourselves with selfies with the Mr. and Mrs. Rock statues around the place. The place is pretty large, has a gussied up fish shack kind of feel. We started with the Char Grilled Oysters, a must have if available. They were plump, large, drenched in a garlic butter and piping hot. Perfect with a splash of lemon. Came with a piece of baguette for soaking up all the good juices. The House Salad (chopped egg, bacon, tomato) was def better looking than the Caesar (plain). Clam Chowder was sufficiently thick and creamy, had some chunks of fresh, chopped, clams, but overall rather bland and sparse, even with the potatoes. I had the Indian River with mullet (also a childhood fave), grilled, since we used to get it smoked; broiled one dozen rock shrimp and bay scallops. The broiled seafood was essentially unseasoned, they left it to you to dress up with drawn butter and lemon. I was OK with that, you could taste the natural sweetness of the seafood. As mentioned, the gratis corn fritters are delicious and addictive, don’t fill up too fast! Probably I have a rose-colored memory which leads me to go easy on them, but they’re a long-standing local institution and it make me happy to visit them.
Not a great spot to dine as a vegetarian at all. There are only two veg items on the menu. That said, we went there so one of the three of us could have seafood, and that person seemed to enjoy their meal. The veggies in the party were stuck with sad iceberg lettuce salads, and side dishes.
