This restaurant advertises serving Thai food, sushi and Vietnamese food. I do not have any issue with the claim that it serves Thai food and sushi, however to claim that Vietnamese food is served is ridiculous. One of the most popular and delicious items in any Vietnamese restaurant, which is considered a standard appetizer is called Bahn Xeo, it is a light, folded crepe that is ubiquitous in Vietnamese restaurants. It is also one of my favorite things to eat. However a proper service of this Vietnamese staple is to serve the crepe, on a platter with (your choice) of sauteed items inside, accompanied by a platter of fresh soft lettuce and assorted fresh Vietnamese herbs. A dipping sauce is also provided. The proper way to consume the crepe is to tear off a piece of lettuce, insert a piece of the crepe with filling, add a few Vietnamese herbs to the mix, roll the whole thing up, dip it in the dipping sauce and stuff it in your face. Well done, this is pure heaven. And while this item is listed on the menu at Kata, I have ordered it twice and both times it did not come with any lettuce or herbs – consequently this is not a Vietnamese dish. It’s like being served eggs without toast at a diner. The third time I went to the restaurant and asked before ordering if any lettuce or herbs were available and I was told by both the server and the manager that neither lettuce nor Vietnamese herbs were available. They didn’t even have fresh cilantro in the house. So as far as I’m concerned I give this establishment a poor rating because I do feel that the claim that it serves Vietnamese food is misrepresentative and an offense to restaurants that do serve Vietnamese food. Lastly, the two times that I actually received the crepes, they were quite greasy which again is not typical of traditional Vietnamese Ban Xeo. Seriously in addition to a good dim sum restaurant, if there’s one thing that Vero Beach needs, it’s a good Vietnamese restaurant!
