This weekend we visited Cooper’s Hawk Winery. Not the actual vineyard, but one of their many restaurants that feature the Cooper’s Hawk wines and offer a Scratch kitchen. I asked our waitress Barbara what that meant and as the word implies, everything on the menu is made from scratch. Our waitress graciously served us all a tasting of their special cask wine blended from five grapes. It was delicious. She happily granted requests for a few other tastings before we all settled on our picks for the evening. One couple in our group ordered a Flight of wine something wed never heard of before. It consisted of four samplings of wine thoughtfully selected to offer the guest a progression of tastes – its hard to pick one when they were all great so this was a delightful way to get the full wine tasting experience.Restaurant Manager Joseph Busicchia demonstrated how they draw their featured wine from the cask into a glass tube and then dispense it into our wineglass. He graciously posed for my photo as recognizing a kindred spirit he swapped NYC memories with my husband. But lets get to the food now enough about the wine or can there ever be enough wine? My husband and I shared the Ahi Tuna appetizer and an iceberg wedge salad absolutely delicious. I chose the chopped salad with blackened tenderloin, he chose the Jambalaya which was prepared beautifully with flavors rivaling those we sampled during our recent vacation in New Orleans. All eight of us were very pleased with our choices. The menu offers a wide range of options so you can choose wisely to meet your budget. Hubby and I are of the mindset to go big or go home so maybe well be tightening our dining out budget for the coming month. But once in while you gotta splurge, and you dont mind doing that when youre getting a quality meal and excellent service.
Sometimes I miss Napa. I long for the smell of the corks and wooden boxes. The busyness of the eager-to-get-drunk at the bar and the green of the vines as a reminder of the closeness between the sacred and the profane. But especially, I miss the wine flights. Coopers Hawk Winery and Restaurant provides the quickest fix to my Napa withdrawal nostalgia. The building stands as aloof as many of the California Wineries. Serious and pompous and seemingly un-festive. The front store welcomes you to sell you wine knick-knacks and gadgets, decanters and expensive crystal glasses. Useless for a wino like myself, but I admit to owning such trifles of the sold idea of la buena vida. The entrance is almost touristy. Very staycationy. Yuppies and oldies elegantly dressed sipping at the bar from this one and that one or that other bottle. The service as impeccable as the sophisticated dcor. No sudden movements or extravagant tics welcomed. I went for dinner with friends and for brunch with other friends. Only the lighting coming from the windows was different. Classy and sullen both times. But they do sell my favorite wine which is any wine that I enjoy, and the many dishes I have shared and tested have remained memorable.I love the flight of Sangiovese, Cabernet Savignon, Petite Syrah and Zinfandel. The Sparkling Flight is also incredible. The peach flavored one is out of this world as is the almond one. We enjoyed our flights with the cheese tablet of Chef Matts favorites. Some Agour Petit Ardi Gasna, some Wildmers one year-aged cheddar, some Salemville Smokehous Blue (even when I am antagonistic to blue cheese I rather enjoyed this one) and some Brugge Kaas Corsedonk which turned out to be my hoarded choice. After much discussion over which cheese enhanced which wine, the lobster bisque soup chunky and creamy warmed me unexpectedly. I was not eager to share this dish, but obliged out of harassed politeness. The house-made meatballs with ricotta are delicious. So are the Asian Pork Belly Tostadas but I have to admit that anything with pork belly in it immediately takes over my taste buds and my memory. Suddenly my epicurean Alzheimer manifests itself with a loud: this is my very favorite thing in the world. EVER My friends understand my fickleness. Do try the short rib risotto. I love truffles almost as much as I love my cat, Vincent. The aroma of this rice almost made me forget I share my life with a feline. The Caprese flatbread is quite nice too, but common. The gnocchi with roasted butternut squash cant be ignored unless you intend to return so that you dont leave with any regrets. The great thing about this place is that you can make this occasion as expensive or as affordable as you want to. There are plates that greatly vary in price as do the wine bottles. All crafted impeccably. When I miss Napa I dont have to beg my accountant, have a melt down or throw tantrums. The Napaesque experience and the wine flights without the flying bring the magic home.
Not Impressed. This is my first review I have ever written. I always read reviews but never write them. With that being said, most of the reviews I read about Coopers Hawk were good, but I did not have that same experience. The service was horrible!!!! We only saw our waitress a few times. Each time she brought a course to our table it had a missing item or the wrong item. The food was fairly bland. The wine was good, but that’s about all. I will not be going back.
Cooper’s Hawk. Great food and wine! Beautifully decorated. Staff was accomidating and attentive. Very busy so we were glad we made reservations.I’ll be back!
Loved it. The wine selection was great. The food was fantastic.
Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. We had two children with us. The restaurant is well suited for families or a party of friends.
An awesome experience!. Everything about the food, environment & service was a #10. Definitely a repeat restaurant for us!
