Blackstone’s – Great place to eat.. I’ve eaten at this restaurant on several occasions and found them to be extremely friendly and accommodating each and every time I’ve been there. I am aware that they recently had a rather severe fire that put them out of commission for several months while they were repairing and refurbishing their kitchen and part of their dining room. After re-opening, they made several changes; the biggest being that they got rid of their salad and soup bar. I know that there have been quite a few people that have been very upset over this, however, I’ve spoken to the management and they were very kind in explaining to me that they were actually losing money on the salad bar due to so much waste. Consequently, they decided not to keep it when they opened back up for business. If you’re establishment is losing money because of something you either are or aren’t doing, it makes no sense to keep it that way, otherwise you’ll end up putting yourself out of business. Additionally, they don’t offer live entertainment on Friday & Saturday nights anymore either and have dropped a few of the more expensive items from their menu (such as the scallops). All of these, I can only assume, were cost cutting measures to try to recoup some of the losses incurred from being out of business during the busiest part of the year due to the fire. I know they have gotten complaints from some of the patrons because these things are no longer offered. The owner told me that recently, the cost of seafood, particularly scallops, has gone up dramatically. He said there were complaints because the scallops were so expensive, so he started offering smaller scallops, which were less expensive. So, then, the patrons complained because the scallops were so small, so he decided to discontinue offering them altogether, which he got complaints about as well. To those patrons, all I have to say is quit being crybabies. Bottom line, he can’t give the food away and he has to charge a price that will pay for his food and yet still make a bit of profit. Also, you’re not going to make everyone happy with the decisions that you make, but sometimes you have to make these hard decisions otherwise you won’t be able to remain in business. Since the city of Zephyrhills, Florida caters to a transient population (i.e. tourists and northern visitors during the Winter months) the resident population decreases by almost half in the off seasons and most eating establishments there struggle during the long Summer months, thereby causing the restaurateurs to have to adjust how they do business. People need to understand this before complaining unnecessarily about these things. Hopefully, in the future, some of these things will return to Blackstone’s. That being said, the food at Blackstone’s is always very good and if something is not to your liking, they will make every effort to try to fix it. Their beef fillets are always tender, fried chicken is always very tasty and juicy and all of the nightly specials are fresh and delicious. They also recently hired a new chef and they are constantly trying new dishes and recipes to bring to the table. The staff is very friendly and courteous and work hard to earn your business and respect. They always treat you like family. Some of the regular customers have been coming there for years as I understand it. The restaurant is always extremely clean (restrooms included), the bar is well stocked with most any type of liquor, wine or beer (including craft beers) that you could want. And the environment and atmosphere is always warm and welcoming. You can either dine inside or out on their patio if you prefer. Despite the changes that have been made, I will continue to enjoy dining at this establishment in the future when I’m in Zephyrhills and I urge anyone in the area to do youself a favor and do the same.
