Went their for Sunday brunch. Food and service were both good. My only complaint would be that the brunch menu is fairly limited. Would like more choices.
Absolutely awful meal. We ate at the Luminary on Saturday night. The experience was really bad. We were very excited to try Krog Street Market, but the food was sub par, the service was awful, and all 6 of us dining together felt that the restaurant was purely banking on their fun, new location but that this would not be enough to survive. If this restaurant wants to make it they will need to do a complete overhaul as the hot new location is only going to carry them so long.
This is why you can get in at 7:30 on a Friday night with no reservations!. We visited Krog St. Market yesterday. Enjoyed it. Decided on dinner and chose The Luminary. 7:00 on a Friday night with no reservations and no problem. I guess that should have been a sign. Decided on wine by the glass and the selection was very nice. Starters included the clams with braised beef and the beet salad. Salad was undistictive and clearly overpriced at 8 bucks. The clam dish, while tasty, had far too much garlic and the braised beef overpowered the clams to the point, I could not really taste them. The mains were the scallops and the duck confit. We agreed the scallops were the highlight of our Luminary experience, but not up to those at The Optimist. Good though. The duck was another issue. I love duck, never cook it at home and always look forward to eating it out. It was well presented, but so salty that it was inedible. I sent it back and passed on another entree as the salt was so severe that it wrecked my palate. I drank three glasses of water. The manager came out and spoke with us…when the bill came , guess what? Yes, the duck was on the bill. The waiter did take care of it, but why would the manager add insult to injury. My guess The Luminary will have a tough time keeping up with the competition in ATL. They will not get another shot from us, and I am ususally pretty optimistic about second chances. Nada on The Luminary.
OK, But Disappointing. My wife and I are both fans of Chef Eli’s cooking, so were looking forward to trying his new restaurant. First the compliments: Service was very professional and timely. Interior space is attractive. Octopus appetizer was very good. Bibb lettuce salad was nicely prepared with a good flavor. Good selection of wines and interesting cocktails. Pricing is reasonable. The Steak Frites entre was a solid average. Certainly an acceptable effort. The Crepinette of Pork was a complete fail in my opinion. First the menu states it is served with fries. Instead they served it with braised endive. The endive had a bitterness to it I did not particularly care for and was somewhat slimy. I am actually glad they did not serve me fries. I tried some from my wifes plate and did not really care for the taste. Not a bad taste, but a distinctive taste. This was my first time eating a Crepinette of Pork. Even though I lack any previous version to compare it to, I have to believe what I was served did not achieve the intended result. The texture of the shredded pork was very mushy (consistency of mashed potatoes). My first taste of the meat was a little unpleasant, with too much of a fatty taste even though the meat was very lean. I found if I soaked the meat in the sauce it negated the unpleasant taste but that is about all I can say about the sauce. Overall the taste was acceptable, but the mushy texture of the meat was difficult to ignore. I think if you envisioned pulled pork BBQ with a very mild BBQ sauce you would have a good idea of what this dish resembled. However, you would be much more satisfied with the result at you local BBQ restaurant. We had high expectations for our meal and overall we were disappointed. Enough good points about the experience and respect for the chef, that we would probably give it another try sometime. But, would not go out of our way to dine there again.
Classical Romance. The Luminary is the light that beckoned me to enter Krog Street Market. As you enter, the bar is the first thing you see, and it has the most gorgeous bronze detailing. The design of the stools and chairs reminded me so much of Rick’s Cafe in Casablanca. The drink menu is exciting and enticing, well-priced for unique cocktails, craft beers, and an elegant wine list. To the right of that is a fresh raw bar, and I highly recommend trying an assortment of oysters from different regions, they’re delicious! I have been to this restaurant three times now, and everything I’ve tried has been fantastic. The flavors come together in the most interesting ways, and while there are classic dishes, there are also more exclusive dishes – such as rabbit, duck, and other creative specials. This is a stunning place for a date, or even a couple of drinks with friends. There is an irresistible charm about this place, and I’ll be back soon!
Underwhelming experience at above average price.
