Friendly place, good food, but vegetarian difficult. We really enjoy this place. The owner and staff are all very nice. Service is moderate pace, and the food is very good. The Nasi Lemak is very tasty. We as a couple have since gone vegetaraian, and I wish there was more than a few vegetarian selections. They have a note on the menu that nearly all dishes can be made vegetarian, and when I requested this, the server didn’t know what i was talking about. When I showed her the note, she it was only for the noodle dishes but they would still charge for the meat.We love the decor though!
Amazing experience!!. 5 Stars for me! This place was awesome. Used the Scoutmob- no problem at all. The owner, I forgot his name was our waiter. He was soooo nice and helpful. He suggested two dishes- authentic Malaysian dishes and were delicious. He talked with us for a while and was super friendly. Food was tasty, hot and great portion size, was hard to finish our two dishes but we did since it was so good. It’s nice inside, island type theme and clean. I will definitely be back!!
Overpriced and Unimpressive. When I was there I was the only person dining in the restaurant…except some of the staff who sat down to have a little meal and watch me. (Yes, it was weird. Maybe they were bored. I don’t know)I started with penang satay, chicken on a stick with peanut sauce. The sauce was ok-ish and there were 4 very small skewers of chicken. Seriously, I wish I had taken a pic of it, they were disappointingly small. Definitely not enough to share. This was $6.95Next, I had a calamari dish. It looked good when it arrived… and then I tried it. They were way overcooked. I smelled something burnt and took a whiff of my dish. Sure enough, it was the scent of the calamari..burnt. There was a sauce drizzled over them that would probably be good if it were not scorched. I tried again and they just were not good. I hate to be wasteful but these were just not good, and I was soooo hungry. The waitress, who had been watching me, came over and I tried very politely to tell her I didn’t like them so much because they were overcooked. She doubted me and said that they were supposed to be crispy. Crispy I can deal with but scorched/burnt? She brought out another version of calamari that was pretty good after digging it out from under all this strange fruit/vegetable on top. Whatever that was on top was not very good at all, and there was a LOT of it. It made the dish colorful but it was not good. This was $9.95Finally, I had the seafood tom yum mee hoon with seafood and straw mushrooms. I was really looking forward to this one because it it is normally one of my favorites. Seafood? There were a couple shrimps on top and that was it. The rest of it was some very bland mushrooms, some carrots, etc. The bulk of it was noodles, like a whole box of them. The broth, which is normally my favorite part was bland and lacking. I had planned on taking part of this dish home but it was so unimpressive that I just drank down the broth, ate the few shrimp and left a humongous portion of boring noodles in the bowl. This was $8.95So disappointed. But wait, it gets better. The waitress also added a $5 tip for herself to my bill. Not cool. I believe tips are earned, not automatic.Overpriced and not so good. I can’t imagine this place lasting long
Pretty Good. The decor is a bit over the top. It tries to make you feel like you’re in an Asian village or something with the bamboo hut decorations. I kind of like it, though. The service was friendly and fast. During my whole time there one of the servers was singing in the kitchen in her native tongue which I thought was pretty cool.I decided to start with the Roti Canai. This was my first time having Malaysian food so I didn’t know what to expect exactly. It was basically a large, thin, tortilla-like thing with a bowl of potato and beef curry. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to eat it, but I just tore off bits of the the tortilla and dunked it in the bowl. I then ate the leftover curry like a soup when the tortilla was gone. The curry had some good flavor to it and the tortilla was ok. I read that Roti Canai is supposed to be a flat bread, but I don’t think this version resembled that.I then went with the Beef Rendang for my main course. This was really good and spicy, exactly what I was wanting at the moment! It came with a side of steamed rice that I covered with the Beef Rendang and ate it that way. This had lots of flavor and heat; both temperature-wise and spice-wise.This place wasn’t bad at all and I could definitely see myself eating here again. I did notice that all the customers were white people, which for an ethnic restaurant on Buford Highway is rather strange, but that’s just an observation and doesn’t really mean anything. I enjoyed it and that’s all that matters to me!
Buford vs Kennesaw. Between this location and Kennesaw, this one is the winner.
Love this place! Just had roti canai, sarong burong and beef rendang. Ahhhmazing. Please try the sarong burong: mild flavorful brown sauce (good even for those intimidated by asian spice)but the magic is that it comes in a fried bowl made of taro (like sweet potato, still has soft consistency with golden exterior) it is filled w shrimp, chicken, and vegetables. That was so creative and beautiful. Lovely people too!
Terrible; left after the appetizers. We had been to Penang years ago in NY and DC, and decided to try the one in Atlanta. The food was virtually inedible. Shrimp wrapped in bacon had been recooked and had a fishy odor and taste. Roti Cani, usually a favorite of ours, was oily and bland, and the chicken was fatty. Service was also poor; we had to ask for silverware and napkins. We left after the appetizers and went to a better restaurant on Buford highway. I would recommend staying away.
