Bomb.com. Loves it! Recently moved here from CA and this is the only place I’ve found that fits the bill when I crave Mexican (thank you for not having white queso dip – can’t believe people actually eat that hybrid cheese stuff, yuck!). Sopes were excellent (actually reminded me of panuchos), wonderful selection of flavorful salsas, and rice/beans are not what I’m accustomed to (they are ordered a la carte and beans are on the thick side) but still very tasty. The market is just awesome. I could go crazy in that store (pinatas! Mexican soda! fideo! jicama!). Best avocados I’ve found so far. They even have a wonderful selection of pan dulce. Meat counter is legit. This isn’t for those who are stuck on ‘watered-down’ Mexican though. This place is for those who enjoy their Mexican straight up with no chaser. If you’ve never had the pleasure, I suggest you open-mindedly try it sometime and relish the experience. You may never look at Mexican the same though (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).
Real Deal Gem. The Taqueria at Carnicera Hernadez is a real treat. It is located inside of this little grocery. If you want the closest to authentic Mexican, go here. It is located on the Veterans Memorial Blvd past the major intersection with the shopping centers off of the GA 20 Exit 14. As you go down the hill in the direction of Cumming, it is on the Right. Look for the Carnicera Hernadez sign with Taqueria and Lavanderia also displayed. Daily lunch specials at very reasonable prices are offered. There are several options of tacos burritos, tortas, sopes, enchiladas and other offerings featured as well. This is a full-on Taqueria with friendly and knowledgeable English speaking counter service. The order is placed in the back and you are given a number on a standing marker for dine-in and your food is brought to you. The order number is called out in Spanish so it helps to know a little, but no worries for Gringos, the staff and patrons help out if they dont see you and you dont understand. The seating is table and booth, a bit cramped but sufficient. There is Mexican TV playing to a mix of American and Hispanic patrons. It is a clean establishment and you self bus your table with dirty dishes in the corner near the salsa area.Ah yes, the salsa. With about 6 different kinds freshly made with pickled and fresh vegetable garnishes and bottled hot saucesyou will be glad you came. The tortillas are fresh in house made. The servings are very generous. We had the Chile Relleno special which included 2 huge authentic chiles with poblano and queso Oaxaca, refried beans, rice and 6 corn tortillas each. To drink we had tasty medium sized Lemonade and Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus water) from the counter mixers. The Horchata was out on this Friday at 1 PM. The food was very good. We could not finish all we had been served. The experience was something you would find on the border. The price was fair at about $21 for the full meals we had. As I looked around, the different dishes being served were just like those I have had eaten in Mexico and in the Texas Rio Grande Valley (Weslaco, McAllen, Edinburg, Brownsville) when I lived there. Menudo is served only on Sundays. Barbacoa cheek meat is served everyday. I am going back to check on the other offerings and will write the details later. This place is so good I wanted to write a preliminary review for others to see what the locals already know. It definitely is worth the trip for area Foodies. Dont forget to take the time to explore the Carnicera for your cooking needs. Meats, offal like tripas and feet, chorizo, fresh bulk crema and queso are also offered. There is a small Panaderia offering and fresh produce and full Latino grocery needs. It is worth the trip to eat and pick up a few things while there if you are from out of town.
