One of the top five dining experiences of my life. Nick Mueller catered my wedding several years back, and people still talk about how amazing the food was. When I heard he’d opened a restaurant, I knew we had to go on our next trip to Savannah. The Laughing Boar is small and by reservation only, and I believe it’s only open on the nights when Nick and co aren’t catering other events, so be sure to check your dates in advance. That said, if you’re lucky enough to score a seat at one of his tables, you’re in for a real treat. The evening starts with wine and canapes on the restaurant’s breezy porch, and continues inside with a mind-blowing seven course meal. The menu changes from week to week, but our dinner started with sushi-grade ‘tuna poke’ on a homemade wonton, continued with a fantastic smoked duck breast and grits, and just got better from there. Our meal proceeded along a European style – meats and fishes up front, with salad, dessert, and cheese towards the end. Every course is paired with a complimentary wine (or in the case of the tuna at the beginning, homemade sake!).It’s not an inexpensive meal ($125 per person, or a bit less if you’re skipping the wine pairings; I’m pregnant and so Nick prepared special n/a drinks for me), but it’s easily worth every penny. His cooking would be at home at the top restaurants in the world, but instead it’s all taking place in this gorgeous pastoral setting, about a half hour’s drive from downtown Savannah.Nick is also planning to open a small B&B on the grounds, and I can’t wait to go back to stay and visit the restaurant again. ps On a logistical note – I think he is able to accept credit cards (am not sure?), but it’s a very small operation so I know he prefers checks or cash, at least for now.
