Suzie’s 50th birthday!. Murphy’s just hosted my mother in law’s 50th, and it was a great time. The people here are always willing to help, and want to make your visit to their establishment a memorable one. Remember to tip your bartender!!!

If you ain’t from around here…. If you are truly interested in speding some time with the locals while on St. Simons Island, Murphey’s is the place to satisfy your craving.Located just off the pier and around the corner from the venerable Queen’s Court Motel (try it… it’s cheap, funky in a 1950s kind of way, and really quiet) Murphey’s is tucked into a small strip of shops. The decor is vintage dive bar mixed with a little Moby Dick here and there. There are couches for conversing, bookshelves for reading, a fireplace for the winter months (my favorite time of year on the Island) and a pool table in the back behind the bar. DJ duties always fall to the bartender so you’re likely to hear whatever he is grooving to at the moment (I heard everything from Frank Sinatra to Prince but you’re more likely to hear jam bands or down tempo rock). And speaking of the bartenders, they are a mixed crowd. Some days you get really great service and nicely poured drinks. Other days, that squinty-eyed pot-head who flunked out freshman year will struggle to get you a PBR in a can. If you’re hungry, you can jot across the street to the conveience mart for a sandwich (plenty of folks do) or help yourself to the free pretzels on the bar.In the summer months, Murphey’s will fill up and seem pretty lively at times. For the rest of the year, it’s a sleepy little local bar filled folks doing their best to drink the trust fund, wait staff from local eateries and bars, and the ocassional lawyer or banker who is fantasizing about writing the next Grisham novel. The dress is always casual… in fact, really casual. But if you aren’t from a moneyed Southern enclave you probably won’t get it. Jean shorts and a t-shirt certainly won’t get you thrown out, but the crowd tends more toward beat up Ralph Lauren shorts and a $90 pinpoint shirt the left in the floorboard of the Land Rover for a few days before slipping it on.All told, Murphey’s is a great place to get a cheap drink and catch a glimpse of an interesting facet of southern culture. The downside… you’ll probably leave smelling like the ashtray in a 1988 Monte Carlo.
