Great place, small very friendly. Small place, three tables, BBQ plate or Hamburger. I live 45 minutes south and still get there a couple times a week. I know they must get great reviews in the restaurant magazines since I been their when people have come up from as far away as Macon. I’m out west for a couple of weeks, but my first or second day when I get back I’ll be up to see Phil and Little Bit
Great BBQ. I live 45 minutes South of the Hickory Pig, but get up their once or twice a week26 Aug, 2012Gainesville BBQ. Several good BBQ places in Gainesville area – my favorite is the Hickory Pig on Thompson Bridge Road about 7 or 8 minutes North of Gainesville – I try and get there a couple of times a weeks. Fun place to have lunch – A lot of regulars like myself – Phil (the owner) must get great reviews, I’ve been there when people from South of Atlanta an hour and a half away have driven there because of reviews. Not a fancy place, but a great place to eat.
Okay. I can’t say the place not good because it is. It’s just been extremely overrated by a local magazine writer more taken with the place’s true to form hick atmosphere than actual quality of the meat being served daily. Sides are delicious, and that’s a good sign, but that’s the easy part. Sides should ALWAYS be exceptional. If they ain’t got the sides right, they ain’t going to get the meat right. Period. Ribs were smokey but tend to be dried out in places and full of fat in others. Pulled pork was again smokey but tends to be dry except for the too watery sauce that was slopped eveywhere. Folks, this textbook barbecue stand has delivered the delicious BBQ goods only about 50% of the time to ol’ Frank here. It has sold me some very tasty smoked meat, but it has also served me with some of the weakest barbecue that made me wish I had a McRib instead. Consistency is a problem, it’s what seperates the greats from the regulars. Check please.
Strange. I’ve never eaten here….they close at 6PM on Friday night…I’m not sure how they stay in business. The outside of the place doesn’t even look like a restaurant; it looks like a shed.
You’ve got to be kidding!. All these great reviews and all these magazine recommendations? For this place? Really? You’ve got to be joking. Ate there this afternoon. We had the pulled pork sandwich, slaw and brunswick stew. There was absolutely nothing remarkable about the food. Mediocre at best. And don’t get me started on the premises. It was filthy. The three tables were dirty. Looked like they hadn’t been wiped off all day. And the whole interior was just…creepy. No windows. And strange, dirty stuffed animals piled on top of each other around the ceiling. A guy sat in the corner and watched every bite we ate. Just strange. And weird. Do not waste your time or money here.
Not just for lunch!. Yes, the bbq is amazing, the brunswick stew is top notch…but you HAVE to try to biscuits for breakfast! Sausage, egg, and cheese is my husbands favorite. Can’t be beat!
Stellar BBQ. All the buzz of late steered me to this place. I went around 5:30PM on a Friday night. I was a little confused when I walked in but after a few seconds of observation, I grabbed a seat and waited for Lil Bit to take my order: cup of brunswick stew and pulled pork sandwich. I enjoyed the slight sweetness of the stew. The pork was very well smoked and had a perfect, toothsome tenderness. Before leaving, I ordered some ribs to go since I was headed to meet some friends for a weekend of fishing/camping/canoeing in N. GA. When eaten later that night with a few sips of whiskey around a campfire, all of those in attendence agreed the ribs were top notch.
