Sometimes Expansion Can Equal Failure. Shanes Rib Shack on HWY 155 in McDonough is the original BBQ spot for the franchise. We stopped in on their 12th Anniversary celebration with free stuff and fun bouncy things for the kids. It was a carnival of fun and much appreciated by all. It was also a great marketing tool complete with law officers on traffic control. Being our first visit, I asked if they were the franchise and was told that indeed this is the original place and franchises had been sold throughout. This location is just out of town a few miles at a crossroads with a quaint and friendly atmosphere. We ordered to go on this Easter Saturday around 4 PM. Though orders were piling up, the food was hot and fresh. The attendants were more than helpful and genuinely friendly. Even with the heavy volume, the caf was clean and tidy. After spinning the wheel of fortune and acquiring a generous free bottle of sauce, we went inside to order. We intended to just grab a sandwich for the trip home, but the nice young lady suggested ribs and pulled pork that she had advised they were famous for. Good sell on her part. Why not–we tried it. The half rack of Baby Back ribs with 2 sides was 13.99. The ribs were back ribs (read my review of Leathas BBQ Hattiesburg, MS for a detailed explanation of that cut). They were a bit bony, lightly sauced on the presentation side (no sauce underneath) and fairly smokycooked on the pit not boiled first. The meat pulled from the bone OK, but not all the way nearest the bone. Little or no smoke ring to speak of and light on bark rounded out the 7 bone serving in a handsome black styrofoam type box. One big problem though. The spine side of the bones had been rough cut. This left small to pea sized bone fragments still attached to the rib meat. They were not cleaned up before cooking making the bite on that end a gritty and tooth breaking experience. That is a mortal sin. Time should have been taken to clean up this cheaper cut and the inexperience of the prep cook and negligence of the pit master is unforgivable. You just gotta do better than that. But the two sides chosen with the rib box were in par with the dish. The mac & cheese was pretty bad. Mushy elbow noodles and a reconstituted, neon-orange powdered cheese product added to the insult. It was totally bland and an indistinguishable cheese flavor lending a questionable hint of American or Cheddar or both. Not good. The baked beans were better but they were simply canned sweet navy beans doctored up with fresh onions and bell peppers. Tasty but not much effort made was a theme that seemed to be emerging. Two Plain Jane thick slices of Texas Toast not toasted accompanied.Hoping for a better box, we turned to the Chopped Pork with 2 sides for 8.99. The pork was borderline mush with no outstanding smoke flavor. This happens when the meat is wrapped in foil or covered in a pan and cooked. No doubt it was done in the pit, but it cooked so long in its own juices that it steamed and turned to mush most likely in the holding unit. It was genuinely tender, but the texture was not pleasing (like toddler food) and no bark or any other characteristic of the dish were noteworthy. No sauce was added to the mix. The first side was Brunswick Stew. Basically this was canned vegetable soup seasoned with chopped pork. Thats it. No other seasoning, no other flavors. It tasted like soup and meat. No salt, no pepper, no nothing else. The other side was fairly decent home style coleslaw; very heavy on the shredded carrots (making the dish orange), quite strong white cabbage flavor (indicating plant age) and a balanced sweet-sour sauce in a tight mayo base. Two pieces of the same bread accompanied. Cost of the two meals with tax was 24.59. No drinks. A word on the sauce provided: pre-packaged to go cups just like at any fast food place, only the houses Original flavor. It had a tangier than sweet punch with a tomato base. The thin consistency was speckled with black pepper. I think the original Original is probably pretty decent, but now that it is mass produced and packaged you can defiantly taste the vegetable gum thickener and the preservative agents which give a bottled flavor. It is a shame that fresh sauce is not served as a condiment. I did not eat inside so I do not know what is served in the dining room.I really wanted to like Shanes, but in the end it seems that even the Original spot has become a victim of marketing, franchise and mass production with the only thing enduring is the Southern Hospitality here at this shop. That is a huge shame because I can imagine a time when quality actually outweighed increasing incomes. Too bad.

The Barbeque tastes like it is several days old and is reheated in Barbeque sauce to try and save it. Last two trips were very unsatisfactory.

Nice visit to the original. I lucked out with a delivery that ran right past the original Shane’s location, so I gave it a shot. It’s a neat place, that’s small inside and the restroom is a real outhouse (with plumbing, but still looks like one). Anyhow, had a pulled pork plate with collards and mac and cheese. The meat had a wonderful flavor and the sauce was excellent and lightly sweet. I think it has honey in it. The mac and cheese was nothing special, but the collards were good. Overall a fun experience. I definitely think this location is superior to the franchises.

Not bad for a no frills rib shack!. My husband and I recently relocated to the area and live down the road from Shane’s. We definitely love our Southern BBQ and are always anxious to try out new places. We went there the other night to give them a whirl and it was very typical of a rib/BBQ shack…no frills, just how we like it! The prices seemed in-line with normal BBQ fare, but the portions could have been a little bit larger (especially with the sides). We both ordered the BBQ and I had the mac ‘n’ cheese and fried okra. My husband ordered the baked beans and fries. The BBQ was pretty good…very flavorful and definitely worth getting again. The mac ‘n’ cheese was phenomenal! Definitely my favorite part of the meal, which is probably why I was disappointed in the portion size! The okra was good, but a little too salty for my liking. My husband really liked the baked beans and the fries weren’t any different from any other place! All in all, it was very good and we will definitely be returning, especially since it’s so close to home! It’s definitely not our favorite place (we hold that spot for Jim ‘N’ Nicks) but a good representation of true Southern BBQ. The service was also very good….great staff, friendly and it was a clean place!
