  Great Times. Met Chef Jerome and what a great guy! The man can cook too. He and his staff were a joy to be around and we can’t wait to make the trip back. Loads of fun!

  A truly unique dining experience. Be sure to meet chef Jerome (just walk into the kitchen and say hi!). If you want large portions, check out the flounder or ‘wheelchair’ platter.

  Magical Soul Food Meets Folk Art Haven & Salvador Dali Dreaming!. S there such a thing as a Holy Grail Food Shrine nestled in the mystical woods of the Low Country? A resounding, yes! This place will school you in what it means to be Old School! Totally worth any amount of time or journey from Savannah, Jacksonville, Amelia Island, etc. My date & I nailed it in 30 minutes flat from Savannah going South down I-95. And journey is the optimal word. Its not just an ordinary drive or typical road trip. These mortal words do not apply here. This is like an ascension into a mystical realm of food, flavor & atmosphere. You have to earn your initiation. There are some twisting, long dark roads as you pass Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge and enter into the Geechee community of Harris Neck, GA. Visually its a true-to-life sojourn into Low Country rural. Approaching the building at night feels more akin to visiting a root doctor’s house than it does restaurant. But make no mistake, no dangers here but would recommend embracing the spooky drive if you’re doing it at night. What you get in the end far outweighs any trepidatious feelings! During the daytime its just plain lovely woodlands so sure, go early if you don’t feel risking your wits! You will never in your life find another place like this. It was literally like discovering some magical building and magical food in a magical environment with magical company. A sense of humor must also be present in yourself. Where else can you park on a foam rubber parking lot? No, you didn’t read that incorrectly. It is like walking or bouncing across sponge cake on your way into the schoolhouse. So already the place has got you feeling more in touch with your eternal child spirit! When one enters the main dining room, there’s that Ali Baba’s cave moment as you awe at the hundreds and thousands of treasures twinkling back at you. Chef Jerome made art, and folk art of others, movie memorabilia, and more. The Scarface stuff in particular will leave you in stitches of envy and can’t recommend enough, sitting at the table beneath the photo box emblazoned with machine gun toting Al Pacino. There is so much color to this decorum its positively scintillating! But wait, there’s more! The food! Other than some table side talk with the great character Chef Jerome himself, he simply offered, You want me to hook you up? Did he ever! Platters arrived with some of the best hush puppy croquettes the planet has ever known to be rolled, a plethora of pork chops, baby back ribs, oysters, deviled crabs, crab stuffed shrimp, boiled shrimp and so much we lost track of it all! And yes, its all locally raised, bred, caught, trapped, fished, caged, etc. So literally the food was brought in from within just a few miles or feet from the place your dining and it doesn’t get any more food local than that! So that was just a glimpse of our own experience and remember, we asked to be overwhelmed. You don’t have to necessarily go the way we did and can order more lightly off of the regular menu! I live in Savannah and more tourists and locals should make this journey. Anymore we’re so used to places that are staged feeling kind of places and after awhile, there’s nothing really special or unique about them. The Old School Diner is literally like visiting this other world and you’ll be hard pressed to leave. But you’ll be called to return and it will become like that sacred place, that when you speak of it, others will stare at you in disbelief that such a place could even exist. So yeah, believe me, it really does. Oh, and old school CASH ONLY!

  Best Food in Savannah. This has to be the best place to eat in the Savannah area. I had the Wheelchair Platter ( fish , shrimp, oysters, and a side) and couldn’t finish it all. Chef Jerome came out of the kitchen to check on my meal and gave me a tour of the place after I finished. He is a great chef who love’s what he does and it shows in his food.
