The many negatives far outweigh the couple of positives. My wife and I go to our tried and true Mexican restaurant nearly each week so when friends asked us to dine with them at La Parrilla, we were quite curious but somewhat skeptical. The first thing I noticed was how piercingly loud it was in the place. Hard surfaces from floor to ceiling assured an abundance of reflected sound for our entire time there. We were hoping for a patio table but no such luck. Additionally, we had to wait at the bar for a bit until our table was ready. As I have mentioned in some of my other restaurant reviews, an architect admitted to me that restaurants are intentionally designing noisy environments. The goal is to increase table occupancy by getting customers in and out as rapidly as possible. The bar service was slow and inattentive. All I wanted was water with lemon or lime and the bartender managed to get it 50% wrong. He forgot the lime. The couple of drinks our friends ordered never arrived prior to the time our table was ready. It even took some time and a request before the bar area we sat at was cleared of the drink glasses and chip basket from the previous patrons. A fresh but miniscule basket of chips was barely enough for two, let alone four people.I arrived at our table first while the others in my party remained at the bar for a short time. I tried the water trick again and as clearly as a designated driver could speak English, I ordered a glass of water with lime or lemon. This time my request was fulfilled 50% correct. I figured this place must be extremely protective of its lemons and limes. I finally saw proof of the citrus fruit the second time I requested it.The other three guests arrived at the table. A single, undersized bowl of chips was intended to feed four. It didnt last long. The accompanying salsa was less impressive than the chips. Both the green version and the red brought to mind my first and only experience at a Chi-Chis, decades ago. The salsa was forgettable. And although the chips tasted better than the typical variety served at most Mexican restaurants, they were the paper-thin, cookie-cutter type of corn chips also reminiscent of places like Chi-Chis, the Olive Garden of Mexican restaurants. The interior was beautifully constructed and colorfully decorated. The a/c was too cold. As it would turn out, the arctic room temperature would be the least of our problems. The only standout items were the queso dip and the black beans. The prepared style the black beans made them exceptional. The guacamole would have been in the running if the fresh avocado flavor had been accompanied by something other than the taste of avocado. A hint of garlic or onion (or something) would have been nice. The dining room was understaffed and this played itself out intermittently throughout our meal with things such as slow replenishment of chips, salsa and tortillas. We also received no plates with our appetizers and had to request them. The omission of lemon or lime with my plain glass of water was minor compared to a drink order mix-up. A regular margarita was served instead of a frozen one. A correction was made fairly quickly. Heres a hint, if you like your margaritas comprised of mostly ice cubes, order the regular ones. If you want a buzz, order the frozen variety. Our friends clearly ordered margaritas made with vodka instead of tequila. All went well during the first round. On the next round the bartender goofed the order. Anyone (even a non-drinker such as myself) can tell the difference between run-of-the-mill tequila and Grey Goose vodka. Everyone apparently, except the person who made the drink. It took some time and some extra persuading to convince our server that an error occurred. I suggested to our server that one sip would make him a believer. He wouldnt commit to a taste test. The worst item on the menu by far was the shrimp fajitas. My wife is half Cajun. Unfortunately for me, its the part that eats. Her birthright provided her with an expert knowledge of seafood. When shrimp are overcooked, farm raised and insipidly bland her internal alarm sounds. Strangely enough however, the veggies that accompanied the shrimp were severely undercooked. The entree was promptly returned and unfortunately, no alternate menu item could console her.I would rate the overall prices at La Parrilla as average to slightly above average and the value below average. If I ever get a hankering for a dish of black beans and I can get a table on the patio during a not so crowded time, this is the place. Other than that, La Parrilla is mostly likely a one-off experience.
Bad Service. My wife and I went to this place (La Parilla) in Norcross and sat there unattended for fifteen minutes. WE finally left without being served. The hysterical part is no one bothered to care. Pathetic service and even worse management.
Extremely rude staff. They talk badly about the American clientele in Spanish when they think the Gringos understand nada.
Wonderful. Far superior to El Ranchero in every aspect, except maybe atmosphere. It may be Americanized, but I felt they hit the nail on the head with all the selections and didn’t try too hard to kick in a special flavor like other Mexican restaurants.
My spouse and I love this restaurant and am very happy we have had a branch near each place we have lived. The food is fantastic and fresh. The service is wonderful and the folks there have a smile on their face even on the craziest of nights. I definitely feel at home when dining there. Consistent, friendly and yummy sums up La Parilla!
I’m pretty sure my meal was microwaved from earlier that day. I got the chicken poblanos and although the chicken was good, the poblano and the cheese seemed not so fresh. However, I had the churros and ice cream for dessert and that was delicious!
