Laid back atmosphere with changing menu and relatable staff. The interior is a little mix of the chef’s life. They have ceramic birds from Costa Rico on the tables. They also double as a whistle and were table decorations at the owner’s wedding. Food was pretty good and very unique. Scallops – yum! The pasta is the only thing that stays on the menu — it was the first dish the chef served to his wife (his better half). Make reservations. Street parking is available.
I tried this restaurant based on reviews. Unfortunately I was greatly disappointed and I wonder if this restaurant pays a service to post positive reviews since the comments were so off the mark. The service was mediocre at best and I do not believe our table was assigned a waiter. We had several waiters serve us throughout the evening and none of them ever asked us if we were enjoying our meal or needed anything. More importantly though the food was at times down right tasteless and at best uninspired. The tastes did not meld. For example the soft egg appetizer (which came out cold) which consisted of asparagus puree, horseradish cream, and ham hock marmalade did not work at all. In fact my wife commented it was if the chief was trying to outsmart himself. The portions were small and overpriced. I had the fried chicken which was two small OVERLY SALTED pieces of boneless white meat. It did not taste like fried chicken and in fact was almost inedible. Sadly the waitstaff never came back to check on us so I was not able to share my disappointment with them. This entree, by the way, cost $26. The chick-fil-a sandwich I had the other day, beats Better Half Fried chicken hands down. In sum, I eat out a great deal and would never consider returning. Better Pass on Better Half..
Better Half terrific!. We enjoyed the five course tasting menu. Each provided a wonderful range of flavors. The dessert assortment with dabs of ginger ice cream, toasted marshmellow, and cheese cake cream was to die for. And loved the back story of being a kickstarter funded business!
What was I paying for ?. I went to this restaurant with two others . We all had an appetizer a main entree , and a beer also 2 full glasses of water and we were still hungry. After telling the owner of this , she offered another entree to us but turned out to be one entree for all 3 of us to share . After finishing that entree we all were still very hungry ! No valet parking , nothing fancy inside . Staff were dressed in blue jeans. The location was in an area that was not very desirable ( a lot of crime ) I left there hungry and broke. Please tell me why I had to spend so much money for what I received ? The food had a good taste but did not make up for or justify the high prices. Oh , and they served their beer from a can.
We ordered everything on the menu for four people. Everything was wonderful. The favorites among the group were the lamb, the beets, the broccoli soup, the empanada, well everything. So delicious. And if anybody follows chefs Kevin Rathbun was our table Neighbor, he seemed to enjoy himself as well.
