Don’t for 1 second expect NY style pizza at Joes New York Pizzeria. They should remove the NY from the name and just call it pizza. Very thin, with very little of anything. Including service.

Great food small price. It was delicious and all for $6. The dough was cooked perfectly and it wasn’t greasy at all. It was just a good slice of pizza. Also, it’s one of the cleanest and nicest small pizza joints I have been into as well. I could come back here a lot for lunch.

I wish I could say I liked this place but I can’t. I ordered a slice of chicken pesto pizza and it was bizarre. They took a regular slice of cheese pizza and dotted pesto on top in a weird polka dot pattern. The chicken, although Boar’s Head, is the ultra-thin sliced deli type that goes on sandwiches, not chunks of breast meat that usually goes on pizza. It was strange to look at and felt amateur. I expected more from a place that specializes in pizza. What I received was what I would have expected at a place that doesn’t normally offer pizza.

A most enjoyable meal. Upon entering, we waited a bit for someone to acknowledge us. It would help to have a Please Seat Yourself sign to decrease confusion and speed up the seating process.Once seated, our waitress arrived without much delay. As appetizers, we ordered pizza knots and the mozzarella capriccio. I found the pizza knots abundant in size and quantity and very enjoyable. However, I also considered them to be somewhat doughy in the middle; not as airy as they should have been. My wife thought the consistency was just fine and the matter was settled. She always casts the deciding vote. In bi-partisan agreement, we both decided the pizza knots had only a trace of detectable garlic flavor. I seem to also remember this when we ate at Verra-Zanno, their sister restaurant. This time, to make up for our loss we ordered a small container of garlic butter but we found no solace. There was hardly any garlic flavor in it either. I am not suggesting that there be enough garlic to ward off vampires but there should be more than a subtle dab of the stuff, especially when the word garlic is predominant enough to list it as an ingredient.Another small suggestion I would make is to use a more flavorful olive oil. Decent olive oil should have at least a hint of olive flavor in it. The olive oil served for dipping and for salads had no flavor at all. The balsamic vinegar accompanying the oil was acceptably average.Joes red sauce is very subtle and while the taste is pleasant in a benign sort of way, it is not a stretch to identify it as being peaked and weak. The gravy would benefit from the addition of more spices and some good olive oil. Any other type of oil used in tomato sauce is an infamnia. What comprised our other appetizer; the mozzarella, basil and tomatoes were overall savory and gratifying. While the texture of the fresh mozzarella was near perfect, the cheese lacked any distinctive flavor. However, the plain mozzarella was generously assisted by pungent basil, a dash of capers and juicy red tomatoes. Nowadays, whenever you encounter a tomato that actually tastes like something, its a small miracle. Even most organic tomatoes dont have as much substance as those in Joes mozzarella capriccio. In times gone by, flavorful tomatoes would be the status quo. Today, a finding decent tomato is worth raving about.A garden salad was up next. The vegetables within it were very fresh and the dish did not appear to be pre-made. From what we perceived, the salad wasnt sitting in the refrigerator for a considerable amount of time waiting for a taker. My calzone entre arrived at the table a bit too quickly. We hardly had time to discover our appetizers. Other than the timing of its delivery, the calzone was very, very good. It was perfectly baked with not a hint of sogginess. It was stuffed with cheese from end to end and was decently portioned. I must admit I like my calzone crust a bit thicker. On this calzone (as is the case in most establishments) the crust tends to thin out too much when you get passed the edges. This did not detract at all from the overall enjoyment of each and every bite. The service was friendly, patient, attentive and overall accurate. The only oversights throughout the entire meal was not remembering the request for lemon and the mistiming of the entrees. Not a big concern at all.The environment at Joe’s is pleasant and comfortable. The noise level was moderate. I suspect it would be considerably louder with a full house. There were only about a dozen people seated when we dined there.Overall value is about average or slightly above considering the better quality and proportions of some items. One unexpected bright spot about the pizza knots that I classified as doughy: The texture improved following a few days in the fridge and after a reheat. They make for a great to-go item! The few shortcomings at Joes New York Pizza are minor. We look forward to returning. On our second trip to Joes New York Pizza we were greeted promptly, albeit a bit robotically. Some aspects of the meal were an improvement over our initial visit. The marinara sauce was much more hearty and flavorful, enhanced by a thicker consistency, less oil and a more abundent mixture of Italian spices. The calzone was more munificently portioned than before but the thin top crust I had taken exception to during the first go-around at Joes had in fact, gotten even thinner. It missed being a crepe by just a couple of millimeters. However, there was an abundance of mozzarella cheese with almost enough ricotta to balance the contents.I thought Joes pizza knots were better this time. They were lighter, airier and not as doughy. My wife preferred them the way they made them on our first visit. Ive learned not to argue with her. Once again, we were both in agreement that a distinctive garlic presence just wasnt there. My wife and I also mutually agreed that the small portion of the Greek salad met our expectations for taste and freshness. I thought it could have been more generously sized and should have contained more feta cheese. We missed the friendliness of our waitress, as the bartender was a bit brash and abrupt. However, the overall service was still good.
