Attended with a coworker for lunch, appeared to have been in the neighborhood for decades, southern food buffet style. A variety of southern dishes, not impressed, everything seemed to be over cooked & the restaurant had wobbly tables & an aged odor, sort of mildewy. The price was good, seems like a local meeting place for lunch in the heart of Tucker. Hadn’t been back.
I went to try the fried chicken. I found it not crisp, but soggy. Nothing unusual that I coUld not find in a number of locations, for a lower price. My meal cost $14 for dessert two sides and breast fried chicken. It was more than I wanted to pay. The service line was slow. They where out of napkins, unsweetened tea, lemonade and forks when I was in line. Trays where visibly not clean and where being wiped off by the guest. I visited this location because it was mentioned by Atlanta Eats.

Best home home cooking I’ve had in a long time. Meat & two veggies along with banana pudding. Banana pudding was just like my grandmothers. Can’t want to visit again should I be in the Atlanta area.31 Mar, 2015Best meat & 2 – can tell homemade. Banana pudding so good. Left here stuffed.
Disappointed. After watching the TV show and then hearing from several locals about how good this place was, I left disappointed. While the food was decent it lacked that WOW factor. The assembly line/ military slop style of serving gave me flashbacks to my Army days. The signature dishes were not available on the day we went. You could tell that they haven’t changed the decor or updated the building since the 50s. I didn’t like the a la carte menu. I understand that’s cafeteria style but you couldn’t figure out what you wanted until you had 100 people standing behind you. I don’t think I will be returning to his location unless I happen to be near.
Don’t believe the hype!. Hard biscuits, runny gravy and hotel hash browns. I should have eaten at McDonalds! Can’t believe I gave them $11 for that garbage! It was 0645, not like the food was laying around for hours!?! Warm OJ from a pitcher sitting at room temp!
A Step Back in Time. Matthews looks like it hasnt changed in 50 years. There is a sort of cinder block institutional look about the place with very little decoration or warmth. The focus is on the food. The cafeteria line is short with just a few options in each category. The food is good, if not particularly memorable. Prices are very reasonable. It was fun to give the place a try and have a real retro experience. But the food, while hearty and good, would not make me want to drive much out of my way to return.
