Mariposa is a bit of an institution, apparently, and a favoured location for some Islanders for a special meal. We were there for a holiday lunch for eight of us! It’s a lovely space, open to the sky, the fans turning, constantly. Instead of bread, you are served popovers (or yorkshire puddings), huge puffy crisp things, but light as air. I think the dish with local fish was the best: delicately done and the right, modest portion. I thought my modern, upscale version of a locomoco was interesting. The wagyu steak patty, seared, tasted so high quality that it did elevate this casual Hawaiian dish of rice, gravy, a fried egg and a beef patty. My brothers both felt that there was less lobster in their lobster club sandwich than before, and an order of pumpkin soup was found to be watery and lacking in flavour. The chocolate cake was ridiculously decadent and I liked the frozen lilikoi dessert, covered in a meringue. So, it was generally a nice meal, but my brother felt they were somehow off their game, and that it wasn’t as nice as it could be, or was, or should be. andyquan.com
