It’s a bit of a basic eatery at an airport. There is not that much that can be said about it in the introduction, so let’s just get to it already. After getting through Lihue airport – which is surprisingly busy and involved for such a small town’s airport – it was that long, familiar wait at the airport (have we not all been there?). With it being so small, basically the terminal beyond check-in is a single hallway, walking around it was easy without getting lost. That meant lots of window shopping, talking, and – for me at least – taking that opportunity to get a bite to eat. There weren’t that many choices at the moment that were open, or not at all even counting those closed then. However, I can pick something out normally – so all was good here. The basic eatery for the airport, without much of a name to it. It is really plain and simple inside. It is part snack store, part general eatery. All sorts of tables are strewed across the place, and some are even on the outskirts. When it comes to the service, this is pretty basic. Almost everything outside of placing the order (and paying of course) and them cooking is more or less up to the customers. That includes taking the trays, bowls et al to the collection point/bin and filling your drink containers as usual. One thing it definitely has going for it is the speed of service, and the ladies were friendly enough. In between just popping out the door to check with the rest of the crew and go back in, my order was sitting there waiting. That is jumping ahead though. It’s menu is a range of Hawaiian specialties, some Japanese influences abound, sandwiches, sushi, bagels…. just some simple stuff. Nothing too fancy, nothing too full on, and nothing too expensive either. When I went, the breakfast menu was still functioning and it had one item that while I was in Hawaii that I had my eye on. Nothing more than the loco moco. To explain it quickly, it is essentially a hamburger patty (other meat can be used) served with a bed of steamed rice, gravy, sometimes mushrooms and a fried egg on top. It’s one of those traditional classics that has a skeleton, and changes are made to it where to suit. There was a certain name to distinguish the one that I got, which I cannot remember at the moment. What distinguished it was that the rice was fried instead. Also, the egg was ordered over easy. Alongside that, I got a cup of coffee. The coffee was decent enough. It was the morning, not that much sleep, just needed a bit of caffeine for a jolt – that was done here. As for the loco moco, it’s fairly basic. There is nothing much wrong with it. For one, the serving size was reasonable. The presentation was a lot like a stack, and the food was very hot. That hamburger patty was decent enough, the sauce was really thick, hot and rich and might have binded the entire meal together. There were all kinds of surprises such as tiny prawns, corn and egg mixed through the sticky, well-cooked fried rice which I quite enjoyed. The egg on top was simply a bonus, and it plump with a good runny yolk. No matter how good the food really was here, I feel that I can’t give it anymore than a 4.0 because of the general look that it has. Down to the bone, it is really nothing more than a glorified cafeteria. A few pointers will be given in its favour. The first is that is was not eye-wateringly pricey, another will go to the fact I enjoyed it, there is a decent and audience-pleasing range for food for another point and give one last one to the fact there was no need to succumb to a fast food chain. More out of necessity than actively seeking it out, with the influx of inter-island travelers it helps to have such a pleasant, relaxed place at the crossroads.
