Had a Navy Grog and a Mai Tai along with my sliders. Drinks were excellent, garnished with fresh pineapple and the stock little umbrellas. My sliders were yummy, sweet Hawaiian rolls piled high with slightly over sweet BBQ sauce drenched pork with a dollop of pineapple slaw. Very enjoyable and sloppy. The outside dining area is great, watch the ocean waves crashing on the rocks, cruise ships leaving and enjoy a beautiful sunset. Our service was excellent, cheerful and attentive. It’s a good thing we were staying at the hotel so we didn’t need to worry about the Mai Tai effect.
Disappointing drinks, wonderful sunset. Met up with some newly formed friends here for happy hour to watch the sunset one evening late January 2013. We were excited to sit out on the patio and enjoy happy hour and watch the sun set. While the atmosphere is lovely and this is a perfect sunset viewing spot, happy hour left us a little unhappy. Drinks were not much of a bargain – hubby started with a Mai Tai for 5.25 at happy hour – he said he didn’t think it had any alcohol in it. Wifey had a draft beer – for 4.25 and was disappointed with a very warm domestic draft. We were enjoying friends company but getting a little hungry so we decided to stay for more. We ordered two Margaritas – blended and although it was still happy hour these set us back 7.25 each. They were horrible to be honest – we think they had zero tequilla, a splash of lime and a bunch of crushed ice. Honestly – we don’t mind paying for premium drinks but come on – at least put a shot in the drink. We also ordered a bucket of peel and eat shrimp. There were about 20 shrimp in the bucket and at 19.95 during happy hour that felt like robbery. Our friends opted for a the coconut shrimp – I think it was about 11.00 and there were 5 little shrimp on the plate. Crazy! Happy hour set us back about 60.00 with a tip. We thought about having dinner there, but after that experience we opted to head out. We did get fortunate to have a decent server who was attentive, but not pesky and we enjoyed one of the best views in Kona for Sunset. Advice to others wanting to enjoy – stick to their beer options and avoid the food.
Once a legend now a fantasy. When you walk into this place, you think ah, Tiki nirvana. Don the Beachcomber. Incredible mai tais. Let me sink into Hawaii. Then you find a lanai seat, look out over the ocean, and talk while you wait for the drink person to come on over. Eventually, she appears, and takes your drink order. And vanishes. No matter how lively your conversation, you will reach the point where you wonder if your drinks have been forgotten. And you did want pupus. In fact, you are starving. You gaze wistfully across the open atrium toward Don the Beachcomber Restaurant. It is inexplicably closed.Meantime, the sun will have set and you will have missed out on the experience you wanted. When the drink finally arrives, you take a sip and wonder why you chose this place.
