Don’s Paradise LOST!. We came to the Big Island for Beaches, Coffee and Mai Tai’s … and after researching for weeks, Don’s Beach Comber Mai Tai came up repeatedly as the the place to drink the Original Mai Tai’s…we, and the reviewers we read, were WRONG! Do not eat nor drink at Don’s; come for the view and the (Royal Kona) hotel experience but the food and drink are so bad, we chose not to finish anything we ordered.Worse than than the watered-down and bitter Mai Tai’s was the exceedingly poor service by the waitresses and bar tending staff; while they know all the ‘language’ of service, it took 30 minutes to actually get a drink that was immediately disappointing. The coconut shrimp were palatable but the so called ‘tacos’ were a desert dry mess. I guess Monday night in late July is NOT the time to visit Don’s.We had even learned that the annual Mai Tai Competition is held at the beautiful Royal Kona Resort…apparently, none of the bartenders that work at Don’s know anything about it because everything we ordered was poor: The Mai Tai Sampler, the Mojito Sampler and Don’s Traditional Mai Tai lacked balance, flavor and interest. While the Mojito Sampler ‘looked’ appetizing, they lacked any merit whatsoever. I feel horrible to have to give them such a bad review but this place has LOST all of the appeal that used to make them paradise. Go to Huggo’s on the Rocks instead as the staff at Don’s could care less what their customers think of the experience at their beautiful, albeit unappetizing, location!

Had their Thursday all-u-can-eat prime rib dinner. Thoroughly forgettable meat and horribly slow service, especially considering it was the special. Had a Mai Tai and it was great and made like a triple! One drink and I was flying!
