This ‘noodle shop’ ran out of udon & curly ramen. The chicken was tough and soup base of the Saimin special was so salty I couldn’t finish. Disappointed this was recommended by so many.

The ocean came in a little too far.. I had the saimin special and was sorely dissapointed. It was one of the saltiest dishes I ever had (almost like sea water). The noodles had a floury aftertaste in your mouth. I tried the mochi loaf and have to say this was incredible?I’m just wondering if the other dishes were as salty.

Worst Saimin Ever!. I had Saimin at Nori’s today, it was the worst Saimin I have ever had. The supposed Saimin tasted just like Top Ramen; you know the dry package stuff you can get for 19 cents at the grocery store. The noodles looked exactly like Top Ramen as well. It was so salty that I could only eat a few spoonfuls before pushing it aside. There were two pieces of pork in the soup that tasted old as well. I have had Saimin at many different places over the years but this one wins the prize for worst ever. I don’t even know why they call it Saimin. My girlfriend had the Butterfish, it smelled so fishy that I had to back away from the table because the smell came all the way across the table and disgusted my nose. She ended up having stomach problems after we left. A lot of locals eat here, I have no idea why based on two awful meals at one sitting.

Nice little secret. It’s a little hard to find (it’s across the street from BJ Penn’s gym) but worth the search. The saimin is a tasty bowl of comfort food. The mac salad is really good! Big portions- for us at least. There’s usually a wait so don’t go super hungry. Love the chocolate mochi cookies but don’t recommend it to bring back for gifts- they don’t travel well- I had chocolate mochi CRUMBS when I got back to Honolulu! 🙁

This is the best restaurant in Hilo. Get the udon with dumpling or the char siu chicken with fried rice. This is one restaurant where you get a Hawaii-size portion but with the absolute best homemade quality.
