Where do you go in Kona, Hawaii for great ribs? Its not a food normally associated with this scenic, volcanic island but there is one place worth checking out. Its called TJs BBQ by theBeach, a small walk- up restaurant close to several resorts on Hawaiis westcoast.TJs BBQ by the Beach isnt actually on the beach, like its name suggests. Rather, it is in a small marketplace of outdoor restaurants and shops known as Alii Garden Market. The beach, however, is walking distance away so I suppose its close enough to justify the choice of names. Its not difficult to find, but you wont see it from the parking area. You have to get out of your car, walk into the marketplace and, after a few minutes, you will find it.TJs sells chicken, burgers, and a few other foods but the main reason to visit this restaurant is for the ribs. They are truly delicious- some of the best I have ever had at any restaurant. Theyare super- tender and the rub they use, the cooking process, and everything else results in something very memorable. Its surprising, in a way, because itjust isnt what you expect from such a small, walk- up restaurant. You expect average, quick serve food but what you get is something much greater.TJs BBQ by the Beach features outdoor dining, so you need to be prepared for inclement weather and other issues. If I had to find one small fault with the food, it would be with the side of coleslaw served with many of the meals. The coleslaw isnt outstanding and could use some more ingredients. But this is a small complaint and it shouldnt discourage anyone from visiting. The ribs alone are worth the visit and the overall dining price is more than fair, especially for Hawaii. I’ll be back. We were out shopping, tired and in serious need of lunch. We stopped at the Alii Marketplace on Alii Drive to pick up some ribs from TJ’s to take home. It is a nice simple place with really good food. We were really happy with our meal. One half rack was enough to fill the two of us for lunch and cost about $15. So we were pleased with the value and the quality of the meal. There are a few tables in front of the place to eat while you are at the market. The only thing that isn’t quite right about it is that it is really not by the beach. The beach is really across the road and on the other side of the condos. But that really it nothing to complain about since the outstanding quality of the food beats a slight exaggeration in its name. #Kona #TJSBBQKONA #KiluaKona
