We tried this place after reading a recommendation from a blog. Ordered the garlic scampi combo which was a lot of food for just one person: 9 large shrimp, 2 scoops of white rice, corn, and a small salad. It ended up only taking 10min to cook, although they say it can take up to 30-40min once you’ve ordered.
Per the recommendation of family members, we tried out Romy’s. When we came by, their prawns were not in season and thus out-of-stock. We ordered their Butter & Garlic Sauteed Shrimp, Sweet & Spicy Shrimp, and their Fried Shrimp, with side orders of corn and rice. Near the cashier, there was a paper stating that it may take awhile. The ‘waiting’ and eating areas are picnic-style bench tables with tents to protect you from the sun and rains. Unfortunately, I noticed immediately that the tables were hardly wiped down and very sticky because of the nature of our food (typically the shrimp and food items are eaten with hands), so it attracted a lot of the flies and mosquitoes. It took us a few minutes to clean up our tables, but it was do-able, especially in waiting anticipation of the food. After waiting a little more than 45 minutes, we received our food, and surprisingly, it wasn’t very hot. The shrimp were overcooked (not mushy, but very dry, despite being sauteed), and had bland flavors. Out of everything, we enjoyed the fried shrimp with the sauces it came with and the side orders of rice the most. Overall, I think the concept of raising your own shrimp, cooking it while it’s fresh, and serving it to the public on the side of the road is actually really neat. However, in my opinion, Romy’s did not execute this mentality and mission very well, and the price of everything was rather expensive for our experience. And after speaking with my family about it, they stated that it was better before, so I wonder if it was an off day when we went…
Fried Shrimp All the Way!!. This was our favourite shrimp stop along the North Shore. Loved the fried shrimp. Didn’t love the wait times or less than friendly service.
Yummy Shrimp. Stopped for lunch yesterday(2/25/14), ordered the garlic shrimp and sweet & spicy prawns. We didn’t know about the thirty minute wait. It turns out the best thing to do is call the order in, didn’t know that either. The garlic shrimp was my favorite. My mouth did garlic gymnastics! Excellent! I was a little disappointed with the prawns. The sweet and spicy sauce was great, but I felt the prawns didn’t absorb the flavor the way the shrimp did, and I felt the shrimp were a better value when you looked at the two plates. Glad we stopped, great food, fun experience.
Horrible experience. Drove out from kaneohe just to have some of their prawns. No line but I waited 3 minutes for someone to notice that I was there and then the lady literally yelled at me when I ordered the prawn because they only have shrimp. Very disappointed…won’t be back
Big Disappointment. I was so excited to try Romy’s bc when I drove by I could smell the garlic in my car. I must say I was VERY disappointed with the food. We got three different entrees and the shrimp and prawns are good but not worth the hour and a half wait. The sun fish hardly had any meat on it. A combo plate cost $20 and all all you get is rice, a small piece of corn on the cob, a drink, and a small portion of salad. I do not feel their food is worth the drive, wait, or money. I would highly recommend Blue Water Shrimp & Seafood Co. Their prices are reasonable, food is great, max wait time is usually 15-30 min, and the staff is funny.
I really didn’t care to much for this spot… The shrimp was way over cooked… Almost to a mush… Nothing at all special about it… Very overrated… Tons of better shrimp spot along the same highway Romy’s is located…
