Not Your Average Filipino Food Establishment. What a lovely new addition to Maui’s restaurant scene! Don’t let the unusual-for-a-restaurant location and industrial building facade fool you, as this place serves up fantastic Filipino staples with a touch of refinement. You really feel welcome and comfortable in this quaint little place. If you get a chance to meet the owners, you’ll sense true pride of ownership. The personalized service and appreciable levels of cleanliness alone would keep me coming back. Thankfully, the food is also fantastic! I’ve dined here on several occasions specifically to introduce my friends and family to this unique dining experience – including some who’ve had bad perceptions of Filipino cuisine based on previous negative experiences. I can report that everyone I’ve brought here has thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Upon my visits, I cannot help but notice a real mix of demographic amongst the diners – kama’aina, local transplants, and visitors, too! The last time I dined here, a nice couple from Wailea struck up a conversation with our table and also expressed their positive sentiments. Rest assured, this is NOT the typical Filipino store dishing up curious cultural delicacies, cafeteria-style, that some of us have grown up with. Far from it. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes and the staff are eager to please, so if you’re looking for something that isn’t on the menu, I’m sure they can accommodate your request. Some of my noteworthy favorites include: the fried bangus (fish) served with a luscious burr blanc sauce, the various lumpia are excellent starters, and the lechon kewali is delectably unctuous. However, the halo halo here is, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had. The accompaniments served with Bistro Manila’s halo halo are all the right goodies minus the oddball bits. It’s topped with a flan that’s yummy in its own right. In all honesty, I’ve come here just for the halo halo. It’s that good. So, whether you’re looking for a unique dining experience or looking for some ‘ono Filipino comfort food, I’d highly recommend that you give Bistro Manila a try.
