No longer BYOB only. Now with robust wine list and full bar. BYOB still fine.... Food still as good as ever. Kamuki still the only real downside…

Not bad. Much better bet than Maharani. Very familiar wih real Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepalese food and this is not bad for US. Bit of a deal to get them to make truly spicy (not just chilies) like everywhere else in US they keep saying they won’t take it back. Repeat after me N A G A…
I prefer Maharani. I am a regular at Maharani, but Maharani was closed last night wed the 31st of Aug— bummer!! anyway, we were in a mood for Indian food so we attempted to go to Taj mahal but it was really hard to find a parking there so finally went to Himalayan kitchen. This was our first time at HK. The restaurant itself look very welcoming and nice inside and outside sittings. We were seated right away outside and the lady was very friendly. The first thing we noticed the tables and the forks and the knives were very dirty so we asked them to clean and they did it right away. Lets come to the point, we always order mix grill and biryani at Maharani so ordered the same thing at Himalayan kitchen. Let me tell you one thing, for the same price how much we got at HK was less than half the size of Maharani ( Maharani’s Meat appetizer is double the size of their Mixed tandoori platter ) and the mix grill is more than triple the size, and the biriyani was one third of Maharani’s size and not even tasty. My husband ordered a lamb vindallo and it is his fav dish. He was very disappointed for two reason there was more potatoes than lamb and it was very watery not as rich and spicy like Maharani’s. I don’t know how many people feel this way, but there is enough reasons that any given day of the week people are lined up at Maharani but here on wed at 8in the evening, this restaurant was only half way filled.
Nononoooo. No No No this is not Indian food. Let me make one thing clear, I am an Indian and I know Indian curries very well. All the curries cooked at Himalayan Kitchen are in a very thick creamy sauce. My question is at this place, how many Indian accually cook their curries in a heavy cream sauce like this at their house? I would understand if it was in a few dishes but not in every dishes. I understand if they are trying to satisfy some local customers but by doing this they are avoiding the real taste of flavorful Indian curries. I don’t know if they cook Indian dishes in Nepal like this but we don’t cook in India like this, very disappointing.
Good Stuff. Went here twice. Once with friends and recently for my brothers birthday. Can’t remember much from the first time except for the yogurt drink, the plain lassi, that I drank which was pretty good. A little tart but it goes does smooth, nice. For my brothers birthday we were there early, maybe around 6:30, plus it was a weekday so that might explain why there were only a few more groups there. It did get busier throughout the evening. They didn’t have any rose lassi which was disappointing as I wanted to try it but they did have the mango lassi ($3.95) that had good flavor and thickness. My brother ordered the aloo partha: naan stuffed with potatoes and peas, $3.95. This was pretty good and the portion size was nice. The taste was good, think about a nicely seasoned starchy pizza lol. This came out pretty fast.My party also ordered regular naan ($2.50), garlic naan ($3.50), and roti: whole wheat flat bread ($2.50). Although they each had their own flavor, I say save a buck and just get the regular naan as that was pretty good by itself. Came out a little after the aloo partha. We ordered madras madness: combination of lamb, shrimp, salmon and paneer cooked in a medium to hot sauce prepared with tomatoes and coconut milk ($16.95), chicken bhuna: shredded chicken simply sauted with a creamy garlic sauce with green onions ($13.95), chicken vindaloo: chicken curry cooked with potatoes and the extra heat of chef’s special sour & spicy sauce ($12.95), mushroom masala: mushrooms and peas cooked in a creamy tom sauce with chefs special spice ($12.95),and lamb curry: lamb chunks cooked with fresh ground spices, onions and tomato gravy ($14.95). This came almost all at once, maybe 15 minutes after the naan? The madness I found to be good but a bit too much inside of it for the size, but that’s technically a good thing lol. Although I was having a hard time telling some things from another until I bit into it and had the texture on my tongue. Their medium sauce is OK for a bit of flair. The chicken bhuna was the best I tried. The creamy garlic saucy was delicious and ooozed goodness all over my tongue :D. The green onion made the creaminess disappear in some bites but I guess they needed to add it for color. I say forget the green onions and let the sauce speak for itself. Note: I did ask if we could get it without green onions but it was already mixed in with the cream sauce. The chicken vindaloo was indeed spicy and not good for those of you with a cat’s tongue. I liked the spiciness though and might order it myself if I go again. The lamb curry was a spice level in between the madness and vindaloo, spicy but not overbearing. I don’t know why but I have a weird fascination with lamb lol. It tastes weird to me but not in a way where I want to spit it out but keep on chewing and tasting. Not sure if it’s because we arrived early but service was good. Had to flag a waiter down a few times but other than that I had no problem.Wish they would serve complimentary naan bread but when you got people who are willing to pay for it like us then why give it away for free lol.Overall, good experience. Taking away one star because they didn’t have the rose lassi and the food being good but not something I would keep going to weekly.Parking is ample, as it is a parking lot, and you pay for depending on the time you were in it or if you don’t mind the walk there is a cheaper option by going to the metered parking up the hill from the restaurant.Btw, if you get a chance to eat inside the gazebo it’s nice and ample seats to sit around in smaller groups with a larger party when you want to talk story. Tried it when I went to dinner with friends.
Not bad, but not the best… I think it’s ok.
For the most part the food was ok.. the lamb was really good.. i love channa masala and that’s what i always order from indian places.. but at himalayan kitchen it was way too salty.. if they can’t get that right i will not go back..
Nepali food and awesome. I love this place. I’ve had indian food – but get real guys there is a wide range of indian food out there. From balti cooking to regional indian food to pakistani to sri lankan. This place is started by a family from nepal and the food is different and delicious. Go and talk to the chef they know what they are doing and I love the food. My difficulty is each dish has a special flavor and when you get 2 or 3 each one is fighting for the spotlight. Their samosa with its special sauce of cilantro and ginger was the highlight of my meal today, it could have been the last mouthful of my life and I would have been totally satisfied. but everything else – lamb, kalua, shrimp korma was great, too. I had enough for dinner ,too so the korma – second time around was the star and I loved it – has a strong lime, ginger, coconut taste.
