This neighbourhood Japanese restaurant has been around for a long time, I understand, and serves up honest, homely food in the Island style with scoops of sticky white rice, some creamy potato salad, a salad chopped finely so its almost coleslaw, miso soup and a bit of pickled cabbage. This family of five all ordered different dishes: a nabeyaki udon, pork tonkatsu, butterfish teriyaki and two combo plates that included sashimi, tempura and some of the other aforementioned dishes. What they call butterfish here, Alaskan Black Cod, is a real treat for this Australian, as it’s very rarely available there. The teriyaki sauce was a little heavy, and the pieces of fish were rather boney, but oh, those flaky bits of tender flesh that taste… of butter. I love it. Niece’s tonkatsu was the closest Japaneses tonkatsu that I’ve ever seen to a german-style schnitzel. All in all, I think patrons of this restaurant know what they’re getting when they arrive and get it. It’s a big enough menu to satisfy any cravings. And the atmosphere sort of feels like home, or at least your favourite neighbourhood diner. andyquan.com
