Hawaiian Down-Home Cookin’. This cheerful little mom-&-pop grill seems kind of subdued in this village. The other restaurants I saw are unashamedly oriented towards tourists, but Papoku seems more oriented toward locals. Just an impression; it could be way off base. But it reminded me of the mom-&-pop taqueras we have back home, only with pineapple and poi, so to speak, instead of chips and salsa. The staff was pleasant, and welcoming almost to the point of gossip; the kind of attitude that makes you want to hang out there. The food is home-style, which means not fancy, but good. The menu offers several things I never would see on a menu back home, and we tried several of the local dishes. Except for the poi — my goodness, how do people eat that stuff? — it was all enjoyable. The ambience is unaffected, and the prices seem quite reasonable by local standards.FOOD: 3 chili peppers (out of 5)SERVICE: 3 chili peppersAMBIENCE: 2 1/2 chili peppersVALUE: 3 chili peppers
